In early 2025, rumors began to swirl that Doctor Who would be put on the shelf following season 15. However, the latest news confirms that those rumors are false, and that a final decision regarding season 16 hasn't been made yet. According to an anonymous source from the Doctor Who camp, "Doctor Who has not been shelved...the decision on season [16] will be made after season [15] airs." Exactly how the rumors got started isn't clear, but their veracity is certainly in doubt.

There are currently no concrete plans for Doctor Who season 16 to be put into production, with the show's future very much dependent on how season 15 and its surprise regeneration scene in the finale are received. So, it's possible that they'll end the arrangement prematurely if season 15 fails to generate enough interest.

After a timey-wimey visit from Jodie Whittaker's Thirteenth Doctor, Gatwa's version of the Time Lord regenerated at the end of "The Reality War," meaning he'll no longer be the show's star if and when Doctor Who season 16 happens. The long-running sci-fi show has been particularly creative with the regeneration process in recent years, and Gatwa's exit is no different, bringing back Billie Piper to the saga in his place. It's unconfirmed if Piper is actually playing the Sixteenth Doctor or if there's another explanation, but it's logical to assume she will be the star of season 16.

Just as Gatwa left in "The Reality War," both Varada Sethu's Belinda Chandra and Millie Gibson's Ruby Sunday also appear to be done with Doctor Who for now. Ruby already said in "Lucky Day" that she needs some time to find herself again, and Belinda is concentrating on raising Poppy, her daughter. So, a new companion will presumably enter the fray to keep Billie Piper's character company in the TARDIS. While there are those who have labeled Piper's recasting as a desperate move by a struggling show to reclaim its viewership, something similar already happened with Peter Capaldi's Twelfth Doctor, with his version of the Time Lord sharing the same face as a Doctor Who character that the actor had already played. ittedly, Capaldi's first role was only minor, so there would need to be a far more convincing explanation for why Billie Piper is presumably playing the Doctor after already playing Rose Tyler.

I'm sure Davies will write a substantial reason for Piper's return to Doctor Who season 16, but there's more to consider other than the actress' return to the franchise. For example, Archie Panjabi's Rani may have died, but Anita Dobson's Mrs. Flood survived and fled the scene - so she is still out there. Similarly, Omega didn't actually meet his end in "The Reality War," but was rather forced back into the Underverse. It would make sense for him to come back as the God of Time in Doctor Who season 16, but only time will tell whether that will happen.
