Warning: Spoilers ahead for Doctor Who season 15, episode 4, "Lucky Day."Doctor Who season 15 cast, but their presence is part of a much longer villain origin story.
The character has only ever appeared in Doctor Who while Russell T. Davies has been the showrunner. So, they were missing from the respective eras of Steven Moffat and Chris Chibnall. When recurring Doctor Who villains go, this particular figure may not even be known among huge portions of the show's fan base, but they've been part of the franchise for two decades.
Trinity Wells Started As A News Reporter, But Is Now A Proper Doctor Who Villain
Lachele Carl's Doctor Who Comeback Completes Her Villain Arc
Trinity Wells has been played by Lachele Carl since Doctor Who season 1, episode 4, "Aliens of London." As is the case with pretty much all of her appearances, Trinity's time onscreen is incredibly brief during her debut. She tends to appear whenever the show puts together a news montage that shows how global news events are being covered by various stations around the world, with Carl's character representing the American coverage. This is also true in Doctor Who season 15, episode 3, "Lucky Day," as it was for her long-awaited return in 2023's "The Giggle."
In "Lucky Day," she immediately sides with Conrad Clark (Jonah Hauer-King) and Think Tank.
Trinity started as a relatively neutral voice, but has gradually become more opinionated in her duties as a newsreader as her appearances in Doctor Who have increased. In "Lucky Day," she immediately sides with Conrad Clark (Jonah Hauer-King) and Think Tank. Aligning herself with Conrad's far-right group of conspiracy theorists doesn't paint her in a very good light and makes Trinity look far more like an active villain rather than a ive one. Her embedded arc is perhaps one of the most subtle surprises in s modern era, and is quietly one of the best executed ones.
Trinity Wells Has One Of Doctor Who's Most Impressive Appearance Streaks
RTD Has Allowed Trinity To Permeate Other Corners Of The Whoniverse
As of her cameo in "Lucky Day," Trinity Wells has appeared in 9 episodes of Doctor Who. For context, Jemma Redgrave's Kate Lethbridge-Stewart has appeared 14 times. Recurring guest spots on the show are never a guarantee, so even some of the most popular ing roles tend to fall short of or even match Lachele Carl's current tally. Sure, she hasn't been the most prominent character in Doctor Who, but the volume of her appearances is still very impressive when held up against more established franchise figures. Plus, her ongoing return solidifies Davies' commitment to consistency in worldbuilding.
"Lucky Day" was rated 7.6 on IMDB.
Of course, Doctor Who's revival in 2005 was just the beginning for Russell T. Davies and his heavy involvement with the franchise. He also created and wrote for two spinoff shows - Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures. Despite the former being aimed at a more mature audience and the latter being child-friendly, Davies maintained his evident adoration for Trinity Wells' continued presence. She appeared in two episodes of Sarah Jane between 2007 and 2008, and two episodes of Torchwood in 2009.

With One Line, Doctor Who Perfectly Sets Up UNIT's Spinoff
Kate and the rest of UNIT will be back later in 2025, and Doctor Who season 15 just revealed a key part of its spinoff's storyline.
Therefore, Trinity Wells remains the only Doctor Who character to have appeared in every spinoff created by Davies. Other crossovers did occur, such as when Freema Agyeman reprised her role as Martha Jones in Torchwood, but Trinity remains the only figure to be ubiquitous in Davies' additions to the canon. Logically, Trinity should also appear in the spinoff, The War Between the Land and Sea. If not, it'll be the first live-action Doctor Who project created by Davies not to include the problematic newsreader.
