With Deadpool 2 set to introduce fans to the cinematic version of Domino, Marvel is taking the opportunity to launch her first ongoing series.

Created by Fabian Nicieza and Rob Liefeld back in 1992, Domino is a mutant mercenary who has the power to make her own luck. The character is set to appear in Deadpool 2, where she'll be played by Zazie Beetz. It seems Marvel intend to take advantage of that opportunity to launch a new ongoing, written by Gail Simone.

"My favorite characters are always the unpredictable ones, and with Domino, you literally never know which way the dice are going to roll," Simone explained. "I love her, and I can't wait to show her best bad side!" To do so, she's shaken up Domino's status quo in a fascinating way. Marvel are teasing that the series will see Domino on the run, hunted by the rest of the merc community. The mutant superstar is pursued by an enemy who hates her "more than anything in the world," and it's time for Domino to learn whether or not her luck has run out. Fans will be thrilled to see Simone on board for Domino. A much-loved writer, Simone first entered the comic book mainstream with a popular Deadpool run. She has developed a reputation for strong character work, most notably with female characters. She's now best known for tremendous female-led series like Batgirl. The last few days have seen Simone tease a return to Marvel on Twitter, and now fans finally know which character she was planning to pick up.

It's not unusual to see Marvel try to capitalize on an X-Men film. Last year's X-Men: Dark Phoenix. Ironically, sales figures don't really indicate that this kind of strategy pays off. It's true that a movie increases a character's exposure. Unfortunately, the modern comic book retail model isn't really optimized to take advantage of that. With comics on sale in specialty comic book shops, few moviegoers will drop in to pick up an issue of Deadpool or Domino.

That, perhaps, is why Marvel has put in the effort to get Simone on board. They know she's a popular writer, with a strong fan-base behind her. Simone's character-work is always top-notch, and the series is sure to be a must-read. The timing is unlikely to make much of an impact, but the choice of writer certainly will.
