Doom 64 would be included as a pre-order bonus for its new game, and it will also be available for purchase on its own.

Doom 64 isn’t the only classic Doom game to receive an update in recent months. In the summer of 2019, Bethesda published ports of Doom and Doom 2 for modern consoles. After a bit of a debacle at launch, with the offline single-player games accidentally requiring players to sign in to an online , the classic Doom games were patched to get 60 fps , free add-on campaigns, and a host of smaller tweaks. Though it tends to be forgotten among older Doom games, Doom 64 is still a solid entry in the series, perhaps overlooked mostly because it was only ever released on the Nintendo 64 until now. Other players criticized it for not doing much to change up the franchise’s formula, which was eventually given a full overhaul in the 2016 Doom reboot.

While id Software is developing Doom Eternal, Nightdive Studios is handling the Doom 64 port. Speaking to USGamer recently, Nightdive senior developer James Haley revealed that the game is being expanded for its re-release. The updated version of Doom 64 will receive a new chapter taking place after the events of the original game along with its technical improvements. Haley said that the new chapter involves tracking down the sister of Doom 64’s original final boss, The Mother Demon. Players who complete the new chapter will learn a bit of new lore that Haley says fans of both new and classic Doom games should enjoy.

Doom 64

The new port of Doom 64 will be available on March 20, the same date that Doom Eternal launches. Doom Eternal was originally planned for a November 2019 release, with the Doom 64 pre-order bonus announced after the delay. Doom Eternal is launching on Xbox One, PC, PlayStation 4, and Stadia first, with a Nintendo Switch version expected at an unannounced later date. Doom 64, however, will be available on Nintendo Switch at the same time it launches for other platforms.

Doom Eternal is likely to drum up more excitement among fans than Doom 64, but there’s still a lot to be excited about in the port. Doom 64 bridges the gap between the series’ old-school roots and the newer generations. Especially for Switch owners, Doom 64 is worth keeping an eye on when it launches later this month.
