John Carmack, co-creator of the iconic FPS Fallout New Vegas once again helmed by Obsidian Entertainment.
It also changes things for John Carmack, who has had a very complicated relationship with ZeniMax Media and id Software. In 1991, Carmack co-founded id Software alongside John Romero, and together they were responsible for some of the earliest and most iconic first-person shooters. In 2009, the company was purchased by ZeniMax Media, and in 2013 Carmack left to become CTO of Oculus and help the company design tech for its VR headsets. This led to a legal dispute between ZeniMax and Oculus in 2014; the former alleged that it owned the intellectual property rights to all contributions Carmack made to Oculus while he was working for id. The dispute was settled out of court in 2018.
In a Tweet following the buyout, Wolfenstein titles. Check out the tweet below.
It's heartening to see good news coming out of this deal. While Microsoft's buyout brings a lot of potential to ZeniMax's titles, a lot of consumers are understandably concerned as well. It's been pointed out, for instance, that this sale could mean that when the long-awaited Elder Scrolls 6 finally releases, it probably won't be on PS5. Corporate greed is a tragically prominent motivator in many factors of the gaming industry, and fans are right to fear it.
The future is always uncertain, especially in the gaming industry. This year in particular has been a tumultuous one for a lot of reasons. Major business deals like the ZeniMax buyout and the advent of next-gen consoles means there's a lot of different things to consider when pondering what next year's gaming environment might look like. The Ancient Gods means that the near future is bright for Doom fans. Carmack's Tweet might indicate that the far future is even brighter.
