Changing up Rook’s look is now easier for players to do than ever before in Dragon Age. Dragon Age: The Veilguard is the newest entry in a series that has been dormant for ten years, but that long hibernation has brought plenty of great changes. Like past games, and other fantasy RPGs, players can create their own custom character to play as. However, unlike past games, The Veilguard allows players to change their appearance after they’ve already started the game.

If players in Dragon Age: The Veilguard feel after a while that they no longer want to look as silly or serious as they did in the beginning of the game, they now have the option to modify themselves at any time. This is definitely a welcome change when compared to prior games either only adding the option in DLC or not having it available at all.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard Lets You Change Your Character Appearance

Become A New Person Whenever You Want

Unlike past games in the Dragon Age series, The Veilguard allows players to change their appearance after they’ve already started the game without the need for any DLC. Both Dragon Age II and Dragon Age: Inquisition included a way for players to update their looks called the Mirror of Transformation, but it wasn't included in the base game. Dragon Age: Origins didn’t include the Mirror of Transformation whatsoever, though it could be added to the game through fan-made mods.

While the Black Emporium DLCs that added the Mirror of Transformation to both Dragon Age 2 and Inquisition were free, Inquisition didn't receive the DLC until almost six months after release.

The Veilguard not only allows players to update their looks at some later point in the game, but it also allows them to go back to the Mirror of Transformation whenever they want, providing a new level of freedom for players. Since many new players want to get to the actual game, they may rush through the character creation and come to regret what choices they made.

How The Mirror of Transformation Works

Located Right In The Lighthouse

The Mirror of Transformation is available very early in The Veilguard, so players can update their looks almost immediately in case they’re unhappy after completing character creation. Once players have arrived at the Lighthouse, they’ll have access to the Mirror of Transformation inside the infirmary with Varric. It sits in the corner of the room near a bookcase. This location is at the end of the very first quest of the game, “The End of the Beginning”, so players don’t have to jump through many hoops to gain access to it.

To update the physical appearance of their characters, players must simply interact with the Mirror of Transformation. Importantly, the Mirror will only change surface level attributes of the player. Players cannot change any core options, like their class, lineage, or faction. The Mirror of Transformation allows players to modify their head, eyes, nose, mouth, ears, hair, makeup, body, and body art, as well as their names and voice. The Mirror does not allow players to change are their pronouns and their gender identity.

The Mirror Of Transformation Should Never Have Been DLC

Allowing Players To Change Whenever They Want Is An Improvement

The magical mirror has made appearances in past Dragon Age games, but never as a part of the base game and as an option so incredibly early in the story. It seems like a no-brainer to let players have this level of control over their own appearance, but past Dragon Age games didn’t make it as easy as The Veilguard does. This new addition marks one of many improvements the fourth Dragon Age has made for the long-running series.

It is possible to respec Rook at any time in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Players simply need to refund their skill points to choose a new build.

For players to fully immerse themselves into a game like one in the Dragon Age series, it’s best for them to be able to present themselves however they want. It’s too frustrating to make an error in character creation that players either have to live with for the next 80 hours of gameplay or consider restarting the entire game if they’re not too far in. Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s update is a very welcome quality of life change that players might overlook, but plenty will take advantage of being able to tweak themselves over the course of the game.
