Dragon Ball surprised everyone by introducing Super Saiyan 4 in Dragon Ball Daima's finale, and now there's frequent debate about whether fans have seen the last of the form. If one Dragon Ball staff member had his way, however, there's another character who could see the form: Trunks.
Super Saiyan 4 has been a major point of discussion in Dragon Ball fan circles in recent weeks, especially since Goku attaining the form hypothetically opens the door for many other characters to use it as well. It might be a good way to give characters besides Goku more power and help them keep up with the ever-increasing difficulty of villains. Not to mention, it would please fans to see characters like Goten and Trunks take on the form for the first time ever. There was even a time when Trunks was supposed to go Super Saiyan 4, only to be shot down because of a debate over his hair color.

One Staff Member Has an Interesting Idea about Super Saiyan 4 Trunks
Following an interview with Dragon Ball's Kubota, interviewer and X (formerly Twitter) @vondbz asked Kubota some questions, which were translated by X @Venixys. After the interview questions, @vondbz asked Kubota what color Super Saiyan 4 Trunks' hair would be. Kubota surprisingly answered, "Black. Because nobody would expect black, it would be interesting and a great surprise!" It seemed Kubota had actually put a little thought into this idea already.
Black hair, of course, was a hallmark of Dragon Ball GT's original incarnation of Super Saiyan 4, whereas Goku's use of the form in Daima saw him gain magenta-colored hair which matched the fur that also appears during the transformation. However, for Goku and Vegeta, they already had black hair, so it seemed their hair simply didn't change at all; Trunks, of course, has blue or purple hair depending on the incarnation, so his hair actually would change colors in Super Saiyan 4. Presumably, the magenta fur would remain that color, although an all-black Super Saiyan 4 Trunks might be pretty cool.
Will Fans Ever See Super Saiyan 4 Trunks in Action?
The Transformation Still Lies in the Potential Future
While Future Trunks has never been shown using Super Saiyan 3 in canonical media, some alternate versions of him from Super Dragon Ball Heroes have, meaning it should be possible for him to go a step further and attain Super Saiyan 4. The younger Trunks from the present day of Dragon Ball has, of course, gone Super Saiyan 3 when fused with Goten into Gotenks, so Super Saiyan 4 would be the next logical step for them to achieve. Given that Trunks and Goten are shown to be a bit out of practice in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, however, they may need some extreme training to reach the form.
Now that Super Saiyan 4 is official Dragon Ball canon, there's always a possibility for characters like Trunks and Goten to be shown using the form in the future. It offers a way for them to stay relevant as the difficulty of enemies continues to increase, and while it may not be as powerful as Super Saiyan Blue, it's likely a lot easier for them to obtain without the need for God Ki. Trunks really could go Super Saiyan 4 some day, although that will require some very dedicated training. Dragon Ball fans probably shouldn't hold their breath waiting for Trunks to achieve the form, but perhaps some day, he will.
