Warning: Spoilers for Dragon Ball Super chapter #93The latest chapter of Dragon Ball Super adapts a few elements of Broly's Dragon Ball Super: Broly film backstory, finally bringing this new version of the classic character fully into the series' continuity.

The first five pages of chapter #93 of Dragon Ball Super include a rapid recounting of the events of the Dragon Ball Super: Broly film. It shows Broly as a baby being exiled by Vegeta's father, Broly and his own father on the planetoid, them being found by Cheelai and Lemo, and Broly ing with Frieza to go to Earth, where Frieza then kills his father in a deceptive manner. These details of the story all match up with those found in the film, suggesting that the entire movie is canon to the manga, even if it hasn't had a full-on adaptation the way Super Hero is getting. Broly's presence in Super Hero, however small it might be, has actually been the impetus for finally introducing the character properly to manga readers, as this chapter adapts the scenes where Goku trains with Broly on Beerus' world.

Dragon Ball Super Sets Broly's New Backstory in Stone

DBS-Broly-Backstory

As a character, Broly was created for the non-canonical Dragon Ball Z movies in the '90s, and became very popular, even though it was difficult for his existence to fit into continuity. Broly was left outside of canon for years, until the Dragon Ball Super: Broly movie came out in 2018, giving the character a new Akira Toriyama-approved origin that fit well with Goku's own. Broly has appeared in the Dragon Ball Super manga a few times before chapter #93, and while the manga has used his new design, there hasn't been much indication as to where Broly came from, since the film wasn't adapted in the manga the way Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero currently is--until now.

Since many fans consider Dragon Ball Super: Broly to be one of the best Dragon Ball films, it's certainly a welcome sight to see this version of Broly as officially sanctioned manga canon. The film itself was said to be the canonical continuation of the Dragon Ball Super TV anime, but such things have been said before, only to be later retconned. The Broly movie did have the advantage of Toriyama's involvement, though, and it even (partially) adapts and expands on a manga chapter written by the mangaka, the Dragon Ball Minus chapter of Jaco the Galactic Patrolman, which covers Goku's own origin on Planet Vegeta that was blended with Broly's story.

While it might not seem like much at face value, Broly being canonical to the manga opens up a lot of possibilities for his involvement in future arcs, once this Super Hero adaptation ends. With a new Black Frieza form out there that Goku and Vegeta must deal with, Broly could be the kind of powerful ally that Dragon Ball Super's heroes need.
