After 38 years without one, Dragon Quest 1&2 HD-2D Remake will apparently be giving the princess of Moonbrooke a name. The first two Dragon Quest titles were released in Japan in 1986 and 1987, predating the first Final Fantasy game and setting the stage for future fantasy RPGs to follow. The games brought to life several iconic staples of the series, including some recognizable characters like the Princess of Moonbrooke.

The princess was a key character in the second game, but she has remained unnamed until now. New screenshots from the DQ remake were revealed on the PlayStation blog, one of which shows the hooded princess speaking. In this screenshot, her name appears at the top of her dialogue box as Peronel.

The Princess Of Moonbrooke Finally Has A Name

38 Years Later, Her Name Is Now (Potentially) Canon

The Princess of Moonbrooke is a key character in Dragon Quest 2, and a powerful magic-wielder who accompanies the Prince of Midenhall on their quest to seek out the great wizard Hargon and exact revenge on him for attacking the kingdom of Moonbrooke. Although the hero is ed by many adventures, three of the main characters in the title have no canon names: the Prince of Midenhall, the Prince of Cannock, and the Princess of Moonbrooke.

In the Japanese version of Dragon Quest Tact, the Princess's name is Pudding.

The first, the Prince of Midenhall, is directly named by the player. The two other unnamed characters, though, received a name from a list of eight possibilities that were based on the Hero's name. In the original Dragon Quest 2, the princess's potential names were Maria, Elani, Ollisa, Roz, Kailin, Peta, Illyth, and Gwen—but it looks like the Remake has eschewed all these names in favor of the name she was given in the non-canonical strategy mobile title, Dragon Quest Tact.

The Prince Of Cannock Might Also Get An Official Name

Dragon Quest HD-2D Remake Might Give All Its Characters Canon Names

If the coming game has settled on official names for all the characters, then the Prince of Cannock might also be getting an official name. Assuming that the HD-2D title is pulling names from Dragon Quest Tact, then the Prince's name might officially be Rickerd. Of course, it's possible that the game will actually retain the random naming convention of the original 1980s titles, but the choice of Peronel for the Princess makes it more likely that the characters' names will be fixed this time around.
