Fresh off the success of Dragon Quest XI, developers at Square Enix confirmed that Dragon Quest XII was in development. The next entry in the long-running JRPG franchise has been in production for at least two years now, meaning fans are getting ever closer to a hero and footage reveal for DQ12. So, just when will Dragon Quest 12 footage be shown?
On New Year's Day in 2020, Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii confirmed that Dragon Quest 12 was in development, and that it had started in 2019. Other than that, details were pretty vague and both Horii and Square Enix have been pretty quiet on the matter since. Even though production began almost two years ago, fans shouldn't expect Dragon Quest 12 anytime soon. However, there's a good chance footage of the game - and a hero reveal - could happen later this year.
It's been far too early to know about a release date, or even which platforms Dragon Quest 12 is being made for. With new consoles launching in late 2020, it's certainly possible Dragon Quest 12 will come out on the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X (especially now that Dragon Quest 11 is on Xbox Game ). And while it may still be years before fans know those answers, Dragon Quest has a history of revealing at least its main hero in advance. So, could this be the year that Dragon Quest 12 footage actually gets shown?
Why Dragon Quest 12 Footage Could Be Shown This Year
This year marks the 35th Anniversary of Dragon Quest, since the first game released in Japan in 1986. Showing off footage for Dragon Quest 12 this year could be a great way to celebrate the franchise's storied history while looking ahead at is future.
Of course, nothing official has been announced from Square Enix or Yuji Horii's company, Armor Project, so this is purely speculation at this point. However, the Dragon Quest (which is in May) would be the perfect time to reveal a hero or some footage from Dragon Quest 12. It makes a lot of sense, because this is a milestone both companies (and developers) will want to celebrate and make memorable. The best way to do that is definitely by showing off something from the next mainline game, even if it's something as simple as an Akira Toriyama drawing of the new hero.
Until an official announcement is made, there's very little details regarding Dragon Quest 12 at this point. However, given that the 35th Anniversary is on May 27th, 2021, it seems like the ideal time and place to show some Dragon Quest 12 footage for the first time.
