As you continue through the story of Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake, you need to get three types of Keys to unlock new areas in the world. As your exploration is halted by Red Doors, Blue Doors, and Prison Doors, you'll need to collect each type of Key. Not only will this help you find new treasures, but you will also be able to progress the story.

The three Keys you can collect are the Thief's Key, Magic Key, and Ultimate Key as you travel with your party. Each Key can unlock a different type of door that, normally, your group can't open as you find them inside various locations. Some of the best equipment in DQ3 Remake is locked behind special doors, so you'll want to get every Key for more than just advancing the story.

How To Get The Thief's Key

Open Red Doors With This Item

Some changes in DQ3 Remake's story from the original game cannot be seen until you get the Thief's Key from the Dreamer's Tower. This area is on an isolated island to the far west of the overworld map, which you can reach by traveling underground. Go through the Promontory age tunnels to arrive at Dreamer's Tower much earlier in the game than you might expect.

One Week After Launch, Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake Sets A 7-Year Record For Square Enix

Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake has already achieved several key milestones, and it's looking like a huge success for publisher Square Enix overall.

Getting to the top of the Dreamer's Tower dungeon will let you collect the Thief's Key from an old, sleeping man on the area's fourth floor. Thankfully, you don't have to defeat any bosses to obtain the Key, as the old man just gives it to your party when you simply talk to him.

The Thief's Key in DQ3 Remake can open Red Doors, allowing you to access areas all around the map. Several locations inside Aliahan Castle are locked behind Red Doors, so try to revisit this area once you get the Thief's Key to grab some great loot. Some Gold and items, such as the Seed of Wisdom, can be found once you open the Red Doors your party finds while exploring.

One of the best things you can get by unlocking a Red Door is the first of many friendly monsters your party can recruit for the Monster Arena. Assembling a team of three recruited monsters to fight through the Arena can lead to many rare rewards.

Here are all the different locations in the game with Red Doors you can open once you get the Thief's Key:

  • Underground Water Supply
  • Aliahan Castle
  • Reeve
  • Little Shrine
  • Path of Promise
  • Khoryv
  • Portoga
  • Nordy's Grotto
  • Kidnapper's Cave
  • Edina Castle
  • Fifer's Spire
  • Pirate's Den
  • Ghost Ship

How To Get The Magic Key

Climb The Pyramid To Unlock Blue Doors

Dragon Quest 3 Remake finding the Magic Key in a chest inside the Pyramid dungeon

You can find the Magic Key on the third Basement floor of the Pyramid, a dungeon area with plenty of enemies to fight. Talking to some NPCs in the Asham region will clue you into the Magic Key's location to the west of the overworld map once again. This time, instead of a secluded island on the ocean, you need to be looking for the large desert that hosts the Pyramid dungeon for your party to challenge.

The Pyramid is near the desert city of Ibis, which you can find southwest of the desert when you enter it. The dungeon, found directly north of Ibis, has seven layers that will challenge even the best party combos in DQ3 Remake who try to traverse it. Tons of traps, puzzles, and dangerous enemies will constantly pressure you as you continue searching for the Magic Key.

To reach the Magic Key the fastest, fall through one of the Pyramid's floors to end up on its basement levels. Be wary of traps here, especially in narrow hallways leading towards stairs to other floors.

When you reach the Basement, activate a button on the far right of the first floor and another on the far left of the second floor. Pressing these buttons will open up a door on the third Basement floor, allowing your group to challenge a boss guarding two treasure chests. One of these Chests contains the Magic Key, which you can immediately start using to open Blue Doors within the world.

Below are all the locations in DQ3 Remake where Blue Doors can be found and opened using the Magic Key:

  • Aliahan Castle
  • Romaria Castle
  • Romaria Checkpoint
  • Asham Townhouse
  • Pyramid
  • Ibis Castle
  • Kidnapper's Cave
  • Alltrades Abbey
  • Edina Castle
  • Manoza
  • Castle of the Dragon Queen

How To Get The Ultimate Key

Unlock Every Remaining Door

Dragon Quest 3 Shallows Shrine location being raised from the sea with Bottomless Pot item

Silver Doors can only be unlocked by using the Ultimate Key, which can be found in the Shallow Shrines once you use the Bottomless Pot to raise the area. Finding the Ultimate Key in DQ3 Remake requires your team to acquire the Bottomless Pot, an artifact you have to steal from the nation of Edina. This civilization is to the northwest of your map, on an island similar to where Dreamer's Tower was for the Thief's Key.

Spells like Fade from spellcasting classes can make your party invisible to Edina's guards, allowing you to pursue the Bottomless Pot. Similarly, you can use an item like a Fading Jenny to make your group hidden as well.

You have to solve a complex puzzle in the basement of Edina Castle to find the Bottomless Pot first. By carefully navigating different rocks in the room onto various pressure plates, you can gain the relic and travel to The Shrine of the Dwarf area. This place is between the northeast and northwest continents of the world, so you need to find a way across the ocean between these areas to reach The Shrine.

Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake: How To Get The Sword of Kings

The Sword of Kings is one of the best weapons in Dragon Quest 3, but it’s not easy to come by. Here’s how players can forge this legendary blade.

Once you arrive at the Shrine, you will be asked if you want to drop the Bottomless Pot into the ocean. By saying "Yes," you can travel to the Shallow Shrine underneath the sea, where a chest has the Ultimate Key inside it. Taking the Ultimate Key will allow you to open any Silver Door you come across in these locations:

  • Aliahan Castle
  • Shrine of the Plains
  • Romaria Castle
  • Romaria Checkpoint
  • Portoga Lighthouse
  • Theddon
  • Lanson
  • Olivia's Promontory
  • Wayfarer's Inn
  • Pirate's Den
  • Manoza Castle
  • Wayfarer's Capital
  • Shrine of Shackles
  • Baramos' Castle
  • Tantegel Castle
  • Talontear Tunnel

The Ultimate Key is the main story item you need to reach the final boss of the game's story - Baramos. Don't forget to collect orbs needed to wake the Everbird to also take steps toward this eventual goal. Getting to the Shrine of Shallows is easier than traversing the Pyramid, as you don't have to fight any bosses in pursuit of the Ultimate Key.

The variety of treasures you can get by unlocking every Door in the game will make fighting Baramos much easier. You should take the time to unlock all the Doors in Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake when you get all the Keys, as this gives you the best items possible for making your party the strongest it can be.
