Arguably the strongest spellcasting Vocation in Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake is the Sage, but you have to unlock this class by leveling up characters or finding a special item. Among the ten other archetypes besides the Hero, Sages are among the strongest characters you can have in your party. However, they are much harder to cultivate than other classes you could have on your team.

The Sage can learn all the spells from the Mage and Priest classes, making them extremely versatile. Anyone with a Sage in their party can use that character as a DPS monster or teammate from the sheer variety of magic they learn for any situation. Although you are unable to recruit characters in DQ3 Remake with the Sage role directly, you can get this Vocation sooner than you think.

How To Get A Sage

Find The Right Item Or Invest In Another Character

Dragon Quest 3 2D-HD Remake Hero character talking to Abbot of Alltrades Abbey to switch classes

There are two ways to unlock the Sage Vocation in DQ3 Remake, by either:

  • Ranking Up A Gadabout Character To Level 20
  • Finding and Using The Words Of Wisdom Item

The fastest of these two methods is to hire a character with the Gadabout class to your party as soon as you can. This way, you can easily level them up to 20 as your adventures continue throughout the game's story. Despite the lackluster abilities of this weaker class, you can make this process easier by making a strong party combo in DQ3 Remake that can function without the Gadabout's help.

The Gadabout class is almost like a joke archetype, spending most turns in combat goofing off and rarely dealing damage or healing your allies. This class is likely the weakest in the game, making it a grind to level a Gadabout character to 20.

When you have a Level 20 Gadabout, go to the Alltrades Abbey area and speak to the Abbot to change their Vocation. You can only change a character's class into the Sage once, and they cannot be changed back.

Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake Review: A New Classic Of An Old Classic

Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake successfully introduces a new generation to one of the best RPGs of all time, along with a host of improvements.

One of the biggest drawbacks of turning a Gadabout into a Sage is how limited Gadabouts are in DQ3 Remake. This class almost only exists to turn into a Sage, with little to no other redeeming qualities that make Gadabout characters useful in your party. As a result, a Gadabout character has lower stats than other archetypes, so a Sage created from that class of character will start weak.

The Words of Wisdom item is capable of turning a character of any class into a Sage. This allows you to use a character with already specialized stats to turn into a Sage, giving you a strong character before and after their transformation. You also get to retain that character's original class abilities, which can vary depending on the Vocation in DQ3 Remake you choose to change from.

Words of Wisdom Location

Discover The Dungeon Hiding This Item

Before you can get a Sage using The Words of Wisdom item, you need to find it first. The Words of Wisdom is a book located in the Tower of Transcendence, a dungeon north of Alltrades Abbey. This area's complex layout and size can make the item you want difficult to find, especially as your party fights their way past enemy encounters.

As you enter the first floor of the Tower of Transcendence, take the stairs in the upper left corner of the 1F map. Walk across the tightrope leading across the exposed break in the broken Tower ruins, then descend back onto the first floor. As you get down the stairs here, stand in the glowing blue square on the floor to be teleported to another section of the dungeon.

Where To Find The Thief's Key In Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake

The Thief's Key is an important item that allows you to open all red doors in Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake, so it is something you should find quickly.

When your party appears elsewhere, travel to your right up the first stairs directly ahead of you. Go south to ascend another staircase leading higher into the Tower, then keep following the next set of stairs to keep climbing the structure. Once you reach the top, go left across another tightrope, but this time jump off the rope at the red flag as your party travels across it.

If you're having trouble navigating the Tower of Transcendence, make sure you have a strong party with you to easily deal with enemies who attack you as your group explores.

Your party will land in an exposed section of the Tower's roof, near a hole in the ceiling. Drop into the hole to reach a small room, then descend the stairs in the corner of this area. This should take you into a small, secluded space of the Tower with a gold chest containing the Words of Wisdom item.

You can take back the Words of Wisdom to the Abbot at Alltrades Abbey to change any character in your party into a Sage. Potential Sages must be Level 20 in their respective fields before they can be transformed. Once you unlock the Sage vocation from your available options, you may want to turn a Mage or Priest into one in Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake, as they already will have the spells tied to the new class.
