Summary
- Precious gems in Dragon's Dogma 2 are valuables and quest items with low drop rates that can be sold for profit or gifted to NPCs.
- Selling gems in areas where they are rare fetches higher prices, encouraging players to store them for optimal profit.
- The decision to sell gems should be based on the player's current needs.
Like any good open-world RPG, Dragon's Dogma 2 features many collectible items for a player to add to their pack. Some are crafting materials, some are used to enhance equipment, while others are used to heal or recover stamina. There are items, however, that serve very little use outside of being sold to make a tidy profit. New equipment costs a lot of gold, after all, and an Arisen will need that gold to stake their claim to the throne.
At first glance, precious gems, such as Jasper,
Onyx, and Tiger Eye, have no apparent uses. They do fetch a pretty penny, and although they aren't the most abundant item found in Dragon's Dogma, their rarity is what makes them so valuable. Still, these items aren't heavy and can always be deposited for later use in an Arisen's Storage Chest if a player doesn't want them clogging up room in their inventory.

One Dragon's Dogma 2 Technique Is A Clever Solution To Fall Damage
Some players have discovered a clever - albeit morally dubious - technique to avoid fall damage in Dragon's Dogma 2.
The Uses of Jasper, Onyx And Tiger Eye
These precious gems are a type of Valuable and are often quest items. Some enemies will drop these gems, but the drop rate for them is very low. For instance, Onyx, a quest reward after completing "A Beggar's Tale," has a 1 - 5% drop rate against goblins (depending on the specific goblin). Even Onyx's item description states that it is "scarcely seen in Vermund," which helps explain why it costs as much as it does.
Typically, if an Arisen chooses not to sell these precious gems, they can instead gift them to NPCs. Each of the three gemstones will gain a player 50 Favor with an NPC that likes them as a gift. Increasing Favor with an NPC will also increase their Affinity, which can lower shop prices, unlock new quests, or result in an NPC gifting something back to the Player. It's a worthwhile endeavor, but these items are the only ones that can be used as gifts.
A Storage Chest can be accessed at any inn or a player's home, which can prove incredibly useful because of the limiting weight capacity of the Arisen. Items from Pawns can also be placed here, so make sure to use the Storage Chest to keep items that may prove useful later.
Selling Precious Gems Requires Geography
Should a player decide to sell Jasper, Onyx and Tiger Eye, it should be noted that where these gems are sold matters. If one of these gems is rare in a specific area, it means that it will fetch a higher price in that area. To make the most of this, some serious traveling is required, so storing these gems to maximize profit once more of the world is available to explore is highly recommended.
Onyx is rarest in Vermund, Dragon's Dogma 2's starting area, so selling them there will turn over the greatest profit. The hidden Elven lands covet Tiger Eye the most and should be sold there, although being unable to understand Elven might make this difficult.
Finally, Jasper is ill-found in Battahl, so it should be sold there. Again, these gems will fetch a decent price anywhere, but spending gold is constant in Dragon's Dogma 2 because of the size of its world and fast traveling systems. Therefore, pocketing optimal profits will make a playthrough easier.
Ferrystones can be bought for 10,000 G from certain vendors and are the fastest way to get around. If money is a problem, try the Ox Carts. If an Arisen dozes off during the journey, it will be a quick one!

Dragon's Dogma 2 Review: "A Wonderful Journey, & A True Novelty"
Dragon’s Dogma 2 is guaranteed to take you on a memorable and immersive adventure, but it’s liable to include a few hiccups along the way.
Should These Precious Gems Be Sold?
Ultimately, it's up to the player whether they want to sell the gems. Gold can be made in other ways, and although they are rare, the gemstones can be farmed if more are needed. Thanks to being dropped by certain monsters, the number the Arisen can get is technically infinite, so the decision isn't the game's biggest, especially considering that some quests are time-sensitive. Grinding these stones will take a while though, due to their low drop rate.
Conversely, there are a myriad of other ways to raise an NPC's affinity. If they are an important character, they will likely have side quests to complete, which are more effective in raising Favor than gifting gems. All in all, it is best to decide depending on the player's current situation. If an Arisen requires gold and is able to make the trek from area to area, then the gems should be sold. If they are seeking a romance with an NPC, saving the gems to raise Affinity for this could prove vital.
