Scott Snyder is one of the most popular writers in comics, and he’s just announced his latest project, reuniting him with frequent collaborator Rafael Albuquerque for the all-new Comixology Original series Duck and Cover, a story involving a nostalgia-filled trip into the horrors of the Nuclear Age.
Duck and Cover, announced through a trailer released exclusively to Screen Rant, reunites the American Vampire team for an all-new creator-owned series debuting this July through Comixology Originals. From the sounds of it, Snyder and Albuquerque are taking a trip back in time, presenting a post-apocalyptic alternate history of one of the most tumultuous moments in American history. The narration in the trailer states, “The year is 1955, and a young man by the name of Del Reeves dreams of ditching his rural life for a career in Tinseltown, making the pictures he loves instead of merely projecting them at his local drive-in.” Being that this is a Scott Snyder comic, it isn’t too long before things take a dark turn: “When a devastating nuclear exchange obliterates the U.S., only the children who took cover beneath their desks are spared a certain death and now find themselves the lone survivors in the hellish landscape of this strange and wild new 1950s America.” Check out the exclusive trailer below:
Snyder & Albuquerque Kickstart the Nuclear Age in Duck and Cover
Duck and Cover is the latest in a string of creator-owned series from Snyder, who has set up his own wing of exciting genre comics through his imprint, Best Jackett Press. Working with some of the best artists in comics, Snyder has produced a number of acclaimed titles as digital-first Comixology Originals, such as Night of the Ghoul, Clear, Canary, and Barnstormers. It’s doubly exciting to see him reunite with previous collaborator Rafael Albuquerque, as their American Vampire series was one of the last great ongoing Vertigo titles at DC Comics.
Duck and Cover promises to deliver yet another horrifically-good time from Snyder and Albuquerque, this time with a post-apocalyptic adventure series that has a unique historical twist. The twist sees the old “duck and cover” drills—which schoolchildren used to practice during the atomic age—actually work in protecting them from a nuclear blast. It's a clever conceit, and the preview art used in the trailer certainly captures that paranoid, Cold War-era period detail. The images of octopoid-like robots with sharpened tentacles terrorizing the surviving children also adds an intriguing wrinkle, making Duck and Cover look like a loving homage to the science fiction and horror B-films of the era.
One thing’s for certain: fans of Scott Snyder and Rafael Albuquerque won’t want to miss their latest series. Duck and Cover arrives digitally this July through Comixology Originals.
