Ducky Is A Saurolophus

Ducky talks animatedly from Land Before Time

Though the Land Before Time movies simply refer to Ducky and her species as a "duck bill," "big mouth," or "swimmer," the 1997 Land Before Time Sing Along Songs video explicitly reveals the character is a Saurolophus. A member of the hadrosaurid family of dinosaurs, Saurolophus lived between 68 and 70 million years ago during the Late Cretaceous period. Besides creating some of the cutest dinosaur characters in film history, The Land Before Time also stuck closely to their real-life designs, and Ducky shared many physical characteristics with the of her species.

Ducky's herbivorous diet was shown on screen through her consumption of only vegetable matter, and she walked on two back legs exactly like the Saurolophus has been shown in fossil records. Most convincingly, Ducky's head features a distinct crest that juts out and backward, a defining characteristic that separated Saurolophus from other hadrosaurids. Despite her identification in the Land Before Time Sing Along Songs video, though, debate still rages on about exactly what species Ducky could be.

Debate Over Ducky's Species

Ducky (Judith Barsi) looks angrily at Petrie (Will Ryan) in The Land Before Time

Because of inconsistencies in the franchise, the door opened for a dispute over Ducky's exact classification, and several alternatives were bandied about. The now-defunct Land Before Time website reported a range of different species for Ducky, including referring to her as a Trachadon and later as a Parasaurolophus. However, the fossil record for those dinosaurs does not match Ducky's physical characteristics in the movie, and modern assessments have opted to stick with the Saurolophus as her most likely species. Even if her species is a source of constant debate among fans and critics, Ducky's larger-than-life personality in The Land Before Time is enough to make up for any scientific inaccuracies.
