G.I. Joe is about to launch in the Energon Universe, but already tensions are forming in the Real American Heroes. Field leader Duke has assembled the best of the best for his elite strike team, but it looks like new recruit Risk isn’t content to blindly follow orders from his new commander.

Coming out in January of next year, G.I. Joe #3 promises drama in the ranks. And considering that former villain Baroness is now on the team, it would be easy for readers to assume she would be the one to come into conflict with Duke, but it turns out another new recruit will be causing problems.

What 'Duke vs Risk' Means For The G.I. Joe Team

The Team’s Newest Recruit is Unleashing New Drama

While Risk won’t officially make his Energon Universe debut until the release of G.I. Joe #1 in November, fans have already learned a little about the Joe’s newest recruit. As a wealthy rich kid who trained to be a cage-fighter, Risk eventually s the CIA as an operative who specializes in risk assessment. He eventually gets tired of sending his fellow operatives out into the field, deciding to take all the risks himself, which soon catches the attention of General Hawk, who handpicks him for Codename: G.I. Joe.

Writer Josh Williamson teased tensions specifically between arrival of the Transformers on Earth, and Codename: G.I. Joe is facing threats on multiple fronts.

Will G.I. Joe Stand Together Against Cobra?

Tension in the Ranks Could Cause Problems for the Joes

Comic book cover: the assembled Joes and Cobra in the Energon Universe.

The solicits for G.I. Joe #3 also discuss Cobra attempting to recruit “a venomous new ally,” teasing either the debut of a classic villain from the original continuity or an entirely new villain created for the Energon Universe. While many characters have been introduced in the G.I. Joe miniseries released thus far, several mainstays like Zartan and Doctor Mindbender have yet to appear, although they’ve been hinted at. Hopefully the Real American Heroes can learn to work together in the Energon Universe because, after all, wherever there’s trouble, G.I. Joe is there.

G.I. Joe #3 is available on January 15, 2025 from Image Comics.
