There is a fair bit of war in political means or hegemony.

Making a treaty isn’t always a wise thing to do. Tensions can run high between the factions of Dune: Spice Wars, and there is a strategy in knowing who best to make an alliance with. It depends on which faction players choose, but also positions on the map. Since maps are procedurally generated, each game offers different challenges, and no two games play the same.

Generally, it’s important for players to know what they hope to accomplish and make treaties with others that help them work towards that goal. This is more for players who are experienced with the game, so newer players should worry too much about making the best treaties for the situation. One of the great things about Dune: Spice Wars and other 4x games is the staggering array of options, and it can be exciting for players to experiment and discover what works best for their playstyle.

How to Start a Treaty in Dune: Spice Wars

Dune Spice Wars Treaty

Treaties in Dune: Spice Wars are accessed through the trade screen for the opposing faction. Players get to this screen by clicking on the faction leader portraits in the top right corner of the screen during the game. There are three different treaties players can make with other factions. First, players can make a research agreement with the other faction, which gives them a bonus to knowledge. They can also make a trade agreement, which increases their Solari production.

The final type of treaty players can make in Dune: Spice Wars is a non-aggression pact. With this, units no longer lose supply when they are in the territory of the other signatory. A good thing, considering the harsh desert. This treaty requires players to have unlocked the Diplomatic Maneuvers development. It is right below the Intelligence Network development, so at least it won’t take long to unlock it. Alternately, if players choose House Atreides as their faction, they can pick Lady Jessica as one of their councilors. One of her abilities is that players begin the game with the non-aggression pact treaty unlocked. It is excellent for those who wish to avoid conflict as much as possible, but it is a challenging way to play the game.

All treaties come with a slight penalty to Authority production. However, it's only -1, so it's not a huge hit. For those playing as House Atreides in Dune: Spice Wars, other factions lose no Authority from treaties. This means they gain more from making treaties than a militaristic faction like House Harkonnen. Importantly, all factions in Dune: Spice Wars can make great use of treaties.
