Every well-established world, many D&D adventures have a general theme, such as a particular physical setting or the goals of the player characters. Players looking to get the most out of an unconventional campaign should consider building a unique D&D character with strengths that will shine in that specific adventure.
Although most D&D campaigns rotate between settlements and wilderness evenly, some may be much more focused on the outdoors. Whether the adventure take place in the Feywild or an expansive, homebrewed forest, wilderness campaigns are a great reason to play a character with a connection to the outdoors. Although Druids are a wonderful option in this type of campaign, it is also a setting where Rangers can finally thrive. As long as their favored terrain coincides with the setting, neither Rangers nor their party will have any trouble getting from place to place. By choosing the Outlander background, a Ranger can also easily gather food for their party, and in doing so may single-handedly keep them alive.
Opposite to a wilderness campaign, some Dungeon Masters like to create urban adventures in which the player almost never leave a single, elaborate city. D&D classes that specialize in stealth, such as Rogues and certain types of Monks, will thrive in an urban setting, since they can slip easily through crowds and sneak in and out of buildings. Rogues with the Thief subclass are especially effective in cities, since their Second-Story Work feature allows them to climb tall buildings with ease. When paired with the Urchin background, which allows a character to travel quickly through any city, a Thief will thrive in an urban D&D campaign.
Playing As A Death Cleric In Dungeons & Dragons
Not all Dungeons & Dragons campaigns are based only on their setting, as many have much more to do with what the player characters want to accomplish. Although most D&D adventures revolve around a group of heroes finding and destroying evil, others follow D&D player characters who are evil themselves. Introduced in the Dungeon Master's Guide, Death Domain Clerics are offensive spellcasters capable of dealing ample necrotic damage and raising the undead to fight by their side. Roleplaying as an evil character can be tricky, but since Death Clerics are beholden to a particular god, they can receive guidance on what type of unholy deeds they should be performing.
Dungeons & Dragons players should always feel free to play whatever character speaks to them, but playing as a character that fits the world they inhabit is always great fun. In order to get the most out of roleplaying in an adventure, as well as remain as helpful to the party as possible, players should consider tailoring their character to match up with their campaign.
