Netflix's Forgotten Realms feels like a stepping stone toward one of most popular ideas for a Drizzt Do'Urden has headlined over 30 books. Additionally, he's made appearances in other D&D media, such as the iconic Baldur's Gate RPG video game series.

However, Drizzt's importance in Dungeons & Dragons lore has yet to translate to a live-action role. Netlfix's plans for Forgotten Realms, but it's not been described as a Drizzt story. But while it may not focus on him, it could easily be what sets the stage for that scenario to finally happen.

Netflix's Forgotten Realms Is Exciting, But It Needs To Include Drizzt Do'Urden

Drizzt Is The Forgotten Realms' Most Famous Hero

Drizzt Do'Urden in Dungeons & Dragons.

The title of the series alone confirms that a Drizzt appearance is indeed on the table. Ther show's title shares its title with one of the Dungeons & Dragons campaign settings that dungeon masters use to create their adventures. Each campaign setting comprises its own unique locations, characters, histories, and races. The Forgotten Realms is just one of several, and it also happens to be the one that serves as the backdrop for Drizzt's stories. In fact, Drizzt is undoubtedly the biggest character associated with the Forgotten Realms.

His significance in regards to that world is so great that Drizzt's name and influence often touch projects that aren't even directly about him. He's name-dropped in games like Baldur's Gate 3, and also referenced in other book series, all being stories set in the Forgotten Realms. Various D&D media are able to create so much attention for the character simply because Drizzt boasts a great deal of in-universe fame. His adventures in his books have spread throughout the lands tied to the Forgotten Realms, meaning that most Forgotten Realms characters - regardless of their proximity to him - have some level of awareness of Drizzt and his allies.

With that being the case, there would certainly be an expectation for Forgotten Realms to carry on the trend set by previous stories based in its world. Drizzt has placed his stamp on so many Forgotten Realms projects that some sort of acknowledgment of the character seems owed, with a cameo or a ing role being among the options the show could utilize to pull that off.

Netflix's Dungeons & Dragons Show Can Lay The Groundwork For A Drizzt Spinoff Series

Given the sheer size of the Forgotten Realms world, there being room for potential setup for a Drizzt show may seem as though it depends on where exactly it's set. However, Drizzt's reputation and status as a seasoned adventurer may make this less of an issue. Since he's so well-known, it wouldn't be surprising at all if Forgotten Realms' cast of characters began making casual references to Drizzt, his companions, and some of the deeds he's accomplished in his books. In this way, Forgotten Realms can establish certain elements of his story.

There is a spinoff already built into a TV series based on R. A. Salvatore's The Legend of Drizzt, proving the potential of this story on-screen.

This could segue into a cameo for the drow hero, who could come across the show's main party of adventurers during their travels. An alternate and less direct path it could take could call for the show to introduce concepts vital to a Drizzt-centric story, rather than the character himself. In contrast to Honor Among Thieves, which introduced the Underdark but avoided the drow, Forgotten Realms could show off of his race and give viewers a taste of their culture, which is centered on the evil spider goddess, Lloth.

Why A Drizz't Do'Urden TV Show Is A Long Time Coming

Were such a plan to take place and culminate in a proper Drizzt Do'Urden TV series, it would pay off years of waiting for a live-action incarnation of the dark elf ranger. The amount of history attached to Drizzt has always been seen as a fountain of storytelling potential, yet it's never been taken advantage of on the big or small screen. When Wizards of the Coast coyly noted that the Dungeons & Dragons movie (later to be revealed as Honor Among Thieves) wasn't about Drizzt but that an in-development show "might" be in 2021, interest in the idea spiked considerably.

Of course, nothing ever came of it, and when another D&D show started taking shape, it seemed that Drizzt would have another opportunity for a live-action adaptation of his story. But that prospect fizzled out too when the series was canceled before it could even get off the ground in the summer of 2024. It would be a massive disappointment if Forgotten Realms doesn't make use of this chance to introduce a live-action Drizzt either.

Forgotten Realms & A Drizzt Spinoff Could Kickstart A Dungeons & Dragons Universe On Netflix

Drizzt Do'Urden wields his two scimitars in Dungeons & Dragons.

Drizzt may very well be the most high-profile D&D property that Forgotten Realms could help launch, but that only s for a portion of what it could set in motion. Its world is too expansive for one show - or even two - to fully explore. After all, the Forgotten Realms essentially occupies its own planet, Toril, complete with multiple continents. Theoretically, Netlfix could spend a decade or more telling stories in Toril and building out the lore of the Forgotten Realms. Forgotten Realms and a possible Drizzt spinoff would only scratch the surface of what this world has to offer.

In proving that glimpse, the two shows would create a solid foundation for an entire small-screen D&D universe on Netlfix. There's an abundance of spinoffs it could lead to, with one example being an adaptation of the Baldur's Gate video game franchise, specifically the first two games in the series. Another option is a show about Elminster, the ancient wizard and ancestor of Simon in Honor Among Thieves; like Drizzt, he has a book series of his own, meaning that there would be plenty of source material for a spinoff to work with.

Depending on their individual successes, they could pave the way for a crossover of epic proportions. That's not unfeasible, as there are several D&D villains - such as Honor Among Thieves' Szass Tam - who are powerful enough to justify an Avengers-esque team-up of Dungeons & Dragons characters.
