This article contains spoilers for Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves potentially killed off one of the eponymous TTRPG's most famous heroes in a surprising twist. Based on the Wizards of the Coast role-playing game, originally designed by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson, Honor Among Thieves has proved itself a more than worthy adaptation, and an incredibly fun blockbuster in its own right. Much of this positive reaction is down to the killer ensemble cast, led by Star Trek's Chris Pine, and the gorgeous effects work that brings the game's numerous fantastical creatures to life.
Honor Among Thieves has received a positive reception from both die-hard fans of the game and general audiences alike, even if some players took issue with the film's depiction of Doric's transformation into an owlbear. While the film has plenty to offer newcomers to Dungeons & Dragons, Honor Among Thieves also packs in plenty of references and in-jokes to the TTRPG. In one of Honor Among Thieves' most surprising cameos, the film may have killed off Elminster, one of Dungeons & Dragons' most famous heroes.
Elminister Is One of Dungeons & Dragons' Biggest Heroes
Elminster Aumar is one of Dungeons & Dragons' oldest and most famous characters. Created in 1967 and appearing in the Forgotten Realms campaign setting for Dungeons & Dragons, Elminster is a gruff, yet powerful wizard. He is also known by his alias, the Sage of Shadowdale. Many of his adventures can be read in the Elminster series of novels, written by Ed Greenwood, the character's creator.
In Honor Among Thieves, Elminster is depicted as Simon the Sorcerer's great-great-grandfather and is referred to as the Great Wizard Aumar. Elminster appears to the uncertain mage when he wears the Helm of Disjunction, teasing Simon for his lack of mastery over magic. However, it is Elminster's derision of Simon that ultimately sees the sorcerer unlock his true potential. Honor Among Thieves' depiction of Elminster as an ancestor of Simon implies that the wizard is long dead before the events of the film take place.
Why Honor Among Thieves Killing Off Elminster Makes Sense
Although his death is never officially confirmed within the film, Elminster being dead in Honor Among Thieves actually makes a lot of sense. Seeing as Elminster Aumar is one of Dungeons & Dragons' most famous characters, an appearance from him was only to be expected in Honor Among Thieves. Having Elminster be a vision within the film not only allows the character to cameo but also to appear in an unexpected way for fans of Forgotten Realms, and the TTRPG as a whole. While Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves may have killed off one of Dungeons & Dragons' most famous heroes, it actually makes sense for the film.
