The next big part of Grant's extensive filmography is another exciting departure. The actor has ed the ensemble cast of the blockbuster Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. The anticipated movie is based on the cult-hit role-playing game phenomenon and follows a fantasy band of heroes in the mythical world. The fantasy-comedy-action flick comes from Game Night directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, based on a story by Lego Batman's Chris McKay. In an interview with ET, the British star reveals why he took the unexpected turn to blockbuster action. Grant its "because it was funny," citing the comedic screenplay, which pokes fun at the traditions and cliches of the well-known game. He adds that despite his uncertainty about the material, the script "genuinely made me laugh," and the humor was "a big appeal." It explains why Grant, who doesn't usually pop up in big franchise films, has decided to play against type.

Hugh Grant's villainous rogue, Fletcher, can be spotted in the first trailer for the film, which debuted at the star-studded San Diego Comic-Con. The first-look footage showcased a monster-filled world populated by several powerful heroes and highlighted appearances from some of the tabletop game's most classic creatures. Dragons (obviously), gelatinous cubes, a mimic, and more are all in the short trailer, hinting at many more fan-favorite monsters lurking in unseen footage. On the human side, Chris Pine's Edgin the Bard leads the team, while Grant's bad guy appears briefly, looking super-charismatic and elegantly dressed. Michelle Rodriguez as the Barbarian, Regé-Jean Page as the Paladin, Justice Smith as the Sorcerer, and Sophia Lillis as the Druid comprise the rest of Pine's group.

The blockbuster looks like a fun ride for fans of the game and new audiences. Grant, who has 30+ years of experience in movies, has voiced his approval for the film's witty screenplay, which will prove promising to anyone doubting the movie's light-hearted tone. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves heads to theaters on March 3, 2023.
