Summary

  • Paramount+ canceled Dungeons & Dragons TV series, but The Legend of Vox Machina on Amazon Prime serves as a perfect replacement.
  • The Legend of Vox Machina, based on a real D&D campaign, achieved high ratings and was renewed for a second season.
  • A live-action adaptation of The Legend of Vox Machina could bring a unique authenticity to the D&D universe.

Paramount+ may have canceled their poor D&D film adaptations. Paramount+ hoped to capitalize on this success with a TV series set in the D&D world, following the trend of streaming services hoping to mimic the Game of Thrones success with high-budget fantasy shows.

While Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves 2 seems unlikely due to the first film's box office struggles, a TV series seemed like a hopeful alternative. However, Paramount+ recently decided to cancel production on the TV series. The toy company Hasbro, who had teamed with Paramount for the project, is attempting to shop the series around to other potential buyers, but there hasn't been any promising news so far. In the meantime, there's some fantasy media available that's perfect for D&D fans.

The Legends Of Vox Machina Is Based On A Real D&D Campaign

The Legend of Vox Machina is an animated series based on a Dungeons & Dragon campaign from the web series Critical Role. The first season was funded by a Kickstarter campaign, bringing on the Critical Role actors to voice their characters. With the show's success, it was even renewed for a second season by Amazon Prime Video, a feat that many adult animated series have struggled to achieve in recent years.

The Legend of Vox Machina may not be the live-action fantasy epic set in the D&D world many fans might've been hoping for, but the fact that it's based on a real campaign adds a level of authenticity that a scripted TV series couldn't accomplish. The TV show boasts a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score and a 95% Audience Score, and it's also well-reviewed on IMDb and other platforms. Amid many high-budget, ongoing fantasy shows, Vox Machina stands out with a faithful quality that many of the more prominent names like The Witcher and The Wheel of Time lack.

A Live-Action The Legend Of Vox Machina TV Show Would Be Perfect

Live-Action Legends Of Vox Machina Could Bring Real D&D To Live-Action

Dungeons & Dragons TV Show

While there's certainly nothing wrong with animation, Honor Among Thieves proved that the D&D universe was possible in live-action. The film proved it could look visually gorgeous and still maintain an element of fun and camp. The Legend of Vox Machina works well in animation, but seeing it played out with a large budget would be fantastic. The only drawback would be that the original voice actors likely wouldn't be involved. Hopefully, Dungeons & Dragons will see live-action TV soon, in one way or another.
