Dragonlance campaign setting for a while now, and there is one reason, in particular, why this adaptation is still a good idea. This adaptation could finally make good on a fantasy TV promise made by one show of truly epic proportions: HBO's Game of Thrones, released in 2011. Transforming George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire, Game of Thrones teased a concept that a Dragonlance TV series could deliver on, as one campaign points the way to this exciting prospect.
If Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves' ending says anything, it is that D&D has adaptation potential in spades, and sharp humor could be the way to tease it out. Therefore, an adaptation of Dragonlance: Shadow of the Dragon Queen should be recognized as a key opportunity for D&D, even though Wizards of the Coast recently snubbed Joe Manganiello's Dragonlance movie idea. The Shadow of the Dragon Queen campaign is one of 5e's best, and it could a great idea that Game of Thrones only briefly touched on.
An Adaptation Of This Dungeons & Dragons Campaign Would Mean Necromantic Dragons
Necromantic Dragons Are One Of The Best Parts Of Dungeons & Dragons
Shadow of the Dragon Queen has necromantic dragons, and a live-action or animated TV adaptation of the campaign should bring that to life. These beings recall the dracolichs of R.A. Salvatore's Legend of Drizzt books or the dragon skeletons. The necromantic dragon embodies one of D&D's most creative and awe-inspiring undead dragons, offering fantasy some of its most unique, meaningful, and scarily beautiful imagery. Game of Thrones scratched the surface of this idea, demonstrating how much further it could be taken by a TV show with a fair budget.
A D&D TV Show Could Take 1 Of Game Of Thrones' Coolest Concepts Even Further
A Dragonlance TV Show Could Build On Game Of Thrones' Success
Game of Thrones brought the terrifying notion of undead dragons to audiences in the form of Viserion, confirming how amazing a Dragonlance: Shadow of the Dragon Queen adaptation could turn out to be. Game of Thrones showed the potential of undead dragons in episode 7 of season 7 when the Night King rode into view on the back of Viserion and attacked the Wall. The decayed wings and chilling, undead light of its blue flames are an epic feat of visual effects, but a Dungeons & Dragons Dragonlance TV show could likely beat this now.

This Gritty 90s Dungeons & Dragons Campaign Setting Would Make An Awesome Part Of A Live-Action D&D Show
There are many locations a live-action Dungeons & Dragons show could visit, and there’s one extreme world from the 90s that deserves consideration.
Viserion's assault in the Battle of Winterfell was another example of Game of Thrones' strong use of the "zombie dragon." The Night King's revival of Viserion did make for a great twist. However, Viserion didn't really go anywhere or develop into a fully realized arc, leaving a gap in the market for ghostly dragons on TV. D&D's necromantic Dragonlance dragons could build on Game of Thrones' success and take undead dragons to the next level. Dragonlance is currently one of Dungeons & Dragons' most essential campaign settings and Shadow of the Dragon Queen offers a logical adaptation.
