Summary

  • A sequel to Honor Among Thieves is still possible despite the new TV show announcement.
  • The TV show and potential second movie should work together to avoid a confusing canon.
  • The new Dungeons & Dragons franchise could benefit from a shared universe approach with both movies and TV shows.

2023's Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves still needs a sequel, and the new TV show announcement shouldn't mean a second movie is removed as an option. While the first movie was received well, its lack of box office success makes the commissioning of a second feature-length film an uncertain event. With the confirmation of a Dungeons & Dragons TV show, a second Among Thieves movie would need to work hand-in-hand with the small-screen story to avoid another franchise with a messy and confusing canon.

The Dungeons & Dragons cast not reprise their roles given the positive reception the production garnered upon release. There's currently very little information on the Dungeons & Dragons TV show, but its announcement so soon after the movie would seem to suggest a shared universe.

The success of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves has made a sequel possible, but what do we know about its cast, story, and release date?

Honor Among Thieves 2 Should Still Happen (Despite The D&D Show)

Chris Pine's D&D Crew should return for another movie

The Paramount+ TV show could be cause for concern regarding a follow-up movie to Chris Pine's Dungeons & Dragons, but developing a second film alongside the TV show would likely benefit both projects. Honor Among Thieves made rule changes to the Dungeons & Dragons universe and created a new version of the world. Not revisiting the most recent adaptation of the property that originated as a tabletop roleplaying game would be a huge waste. Among Thieves hit on an entertaining formula that can be expanded upon in a second installment in ways that a TV show can't.

Dungeons & Dragons could be the latest in a long line to in with this dynamic method of furthering a franchise's narrative.

Other properties have split their storytelling between movies and TV shows, and while results have been mixed, there have been successes as well. For instance, the Star Wars franchise has produced TV shows and feature-length films that all fit within the same canon.

The MCU also uses this storytelling device. As such, Dungeons & Dragons could be the latest in a long line to in with this dynamic method of furthering a franchise's narrative. While the first Honor Among Thieves could be used as a jumping-off point for the TV show, Chris Pine and company deserve another outing.

The Dungeons & Dragons TV Show Is Still In Development

Paramount+'s new live-action D&D project is still in its early stages

Although details are scarce, a promising Dungeons & Dragons TV show update has revealed the collaboration with Paramount+ is indeed going to happen. The fact that the new addition to the franchise is being developed, despite the first movie's financial shortcomings, shows the studio's faith in the quality of its product. According to Deadline, the show is set to be the "Studio's largest-scope TV project ever," which could be a sign that the show is a long-term commitment. As such, the show could be just as much of a visual spectacle as Honor Among Thieves.

One of the studios involved in the production of Honor Among Thieves, Entertainment One (eOne), has been prioritizing the TV adaption of Dungeons & Dragons for a while. So, now that the show is confirmed to be going ahead with its eight-episode run, it could be the beginning of an expansive on-screen universe for the franchise. It's unclear at this time whether the characters from Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves will be reused for the TV show.

How Dungeons & Dragons' TV Show Can Set Up Honor Among Thieves 2

The D&D TV show can compliment a follow-up movie to Honor Among Thieves

Just as Honor Among Thieves serves as a self-contained narrative, Dungeons & Dragons' next live-action release can also chronicle an adventure that doesn't need any foreknowledge of the franchise and features a satisfying conclusion. The show can serve as a jumping-on point for new fans who may not have seen the first movie.

However, while the show shouldn't end on a cliffhanger, it can still carry certain references and new characters into Honor Among Thieves 2. Doing this would start to create a cohesive cinematic universe while still being accessible to old and new fans.

Bradley Cooper appears in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves for a brief cameo and it turns out he was specifically picked for the role.

Dungeons & Dragons is an interesting position of creating a series of on-screen stories that make sense when watched in order, but also individually. To put it another way, fans could choose to start with the new TV show, or either of the movies, without missing out on too much.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is available to stream on Prime Video.

This "choose your own adventure" approach would create a parallel between the new Dungeons & Dragons franchise and its tabletop origin. So, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves could end up having two sequels if it gets a second movie and a TV show, which is a very exciting prospect.
