WARNING: SPOILERS ahead for Duster season 1, episode 1.

Jim calls Izzy's daughter, Luna, his niece in cast of Duster, J.J. Abrams and LaToya Morgan's classic HBO Max crime thriller series, along with Josh Holloway as Jim, Rachel Hilson as Nina, and Camille Guaty as Izzy, Luna's mom and Jim's former love interest.

The opening sequence of the first episode of Duster features Jim taking Luna along for the ride as he does an odd job for a Phoenix gangster named Ezra Saxon. Jim answers a call on a payphone in the middle of the Arizona desert, telling him to pick up a human heart, code-named "24 Sloppy Josés," from a local Mexican restaurant. Luna has no idea what's really going on, but chastises her "Uncle Jim" for swearing as she casually counts a stack of $100 bills. Luna finds a bill with a red panda stamp on it that flies out of the window before she and Jim pick up the goods and lose two pursuers.

When Uncle Jim drops Luna off at Izzy's house, she scolds him for being two hours late. Jim tells her something came up, which sounds like the same old song Izzy has heard throughout her time knowing Jim. She tells him, "This is what I'm talking about. I can't rely on you. This is why she can't know," alluding to the fact that Jim is secretly Luna's biological father.

While this is certainly an extreme measure to protect Luna, Izzy feels like it's necessary because of Jim's apparent failures as a father in the past.

While this is certainly an extreme measure to protect Luna, Izzy feels like it's necessary because of Jim's apparent failures as a father in the past. It's not exactly clear when this decision was made, but Luna has always known Jim as her uncle and never as her father.

Despite not getting to have an honest relationship with Luna as his daughter, Jim seems pretty okay with Izzy's decision to keep him as Luna's "uncle." He reassures Izzy that Luna has no clue what the truth is and seems to be in agreement with Izzy's decision. Lizzy is waiting for Jim to start being more responsible, which is what he will have to do if he ever wants to have a true relationship with Luna. Jim and Izzy aren't married, as evidenced by their lack of wedding rings. It's unclear after Duster episode 1 whether Izzy ever plans to tell Luna the truth about Jim.

Why Izzy Doesn’t Want Luna To Know Jim Is Her Biological Father

Jim Is Involved In Too Many Shady Dealings & Won't Be Tied Down

It's understandable why Izzy wasn't to shelter Luna from Jim, even though he puts her in some pretty dangerous yet "fun" situations as her uncle. For one, Jim's a getaway driver and odd job man for Ezra Saxon, who's referred to as "the Al Capone of the Southwest." Izzy is not only protecting Luna but herself in case Jim ever gets into a situation that he can't come back from. He nearly takes off to Mexico to start driving for another notorious gangster, Mad Raul, in Duster season 1, episode 1. Jim can be a great time, but he's light years away from being a responsible parent.

Rachel Hilson's FBI agent Nina in Duster season 1 honors the legacy of several prolific black women FBI agents, including the first to ever do it.

Izzy still has feelings for Jim, but he's too much of a rolling stone and a wildcard for her as a mother. When they were younger and freer, she might have seen a life with Jim that would have required him to change. Jim's free-spirited vibe and taste for adventure prevent him from ever domesticating himself to match Izzy's expectations of him as a father. Additionally, Izzy doesn't want Luna to model her notion of what a father is after Jim. Ideally, Jim would live with Izzy and get a normal, crime-free job if he ever wanted to be a family man. If that were the case, however, there wouldn't be much action in Duster.
