While Johnson's highly-anticipated film The Smashing Machine will offer fans a rare dramatic role for the action star, Johnson's classic thriller Faster is now streaming on Netflix. Faster was directed by George Tillman Jr., known best for Men of Honor (2000) and Notorious (2009). Despite its title, Faster was not a part of the Fast & Furious franchise which Johnson eventually ed as Luke Hobbs in 2011's Fast Five. Johnson has since starred in several Fast & Furious sequels and the spinoff movie Hobbs & Shaw.

Most critics found Faster to be shallow and faulty in its plot structure. Stephen Holden of the New York Times wrote in his review, "Structurally "Faster" is as blocky as its star. Fancy camera angles and changes in hue cannot camouflage its stumbling, blunt-force narrative style, in which plot turns are dropped like bricks." Generally speaking, Faster is an unremarkable and underwritten action thriller that would likely only satisfy true ers of the genre and Dwayne Johnson's biggest fans.
