As previously promised, Dying Light 2: Stay Human, in which the crew detailed what players should anticipate from the branching narrative. Fans of the nascent zombie franchise have patiently awaited this day for months, especially since Techland has largely remained quiet about the sequel for well over a year.
The rug was pulled out from under the studio's big day, however. Earlier this morning, in the lead-up to the broadcast's premiere, a few choice pieces of information began making the rounds online. Notably, a leaked ment indicated Techland had the long-awaited Dying Light sequel scheduled for a December 2021 release on PC, current-gen, and last-gen hardware. The developer has since corroborated as much in the aforementioned gameplay stream. Several other intriguing details came out of the digital showcase, as well.
Partway through the broadcast in question, a couple of Dying Light developers shared a breakdown of the game's choice and consequence-based branching storyline. According to Game Designer Michał Dudziak, every player choice will be based upon "three layers." Firstly, decisions made during main story missions affect the game as a whole - the ending included. The second layer comes into play due to choices made in individual quests that influence the mission itself. Dying Light 2's "City Alignment System" constitutes the final layer.
Dudziak said restoring water or electricity to one part of the open-world city will culminate in players asg the renewed area to a faction of their choice. Thus, that specific section of town will adopt a certain look and prove welcoming to different types of inhabitants. Because every faction boasts their own specialties, these particular decisions will also inform which equipment players will unlock. And thanks to Dying Light 2's four-player cooperative options, s can see how their friends' city differs from theirs when teaming up.
All of the above indicates that Dying Light 2 is far more ambitious than many probably realized, which explains Techland's request for fans to remain patient earlier in the year. Based on what's been shown, thus far, the wait may be well worth it in the end.
Techland originally announced Dying Light 2 during E3 2018. Clearly, a lot has changed in the nearly three years since then. Most notably, Microsoft and Sony have unleashed a new console generation; it appears the apocalyptic title will take advantage of the new hardware, too.
Dying Light 2: Stay Human hits stores later this year on December 7 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S platforms.
