James Gunn has announced a new animated theatrical movie for the Superman releasing in 2025, which will be the DCU's first movie. Gunn has promised that there will be connectivity between the animated and live-action stories, ensuring that every story, regardless of the medium, is an important part of a cohesive and exciting superhero universe.

On X/Twitter, Gunn has now shared that Dynamic Duo, an animated movie about Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, has been greenlit by DC Studios/Warner Bros. Pictures Animation, and will be released in theaters. Check out Gunn's post below:

He also revealed that the feature-length movie will be made by Swaybox Studios using a cutting-edge blend of animation, puppetry, and CGI. Dynamic Duo's script is being written by Matt Aldrich, whose previous work includes Pixar's Coco and Lightyear. The DC movie is being produced by 6th and Idaho, the production company of The Batman director Matt Reeves.

What This Means For The DC Universe

Animated Movies Will Hold Tremendous Weight In The DCU

Dynamic Duo is an intriguing story, especially for fans of Robin, but most importantly, it further emphasizes that animation is just as important as live-action in the DCU. Beginning the DCU with the animated Creature Commandos is a compelling way to start the superhero universe, but experiencing this story will be limited to Max subscribers. Dynamic Duo, on the other hand, will be more accessible as a theatrical release treated with the same level of importance as the live-action movies.

Batman: The Animated Series was so iconic and quintessential, that the DCU would be wise to learn from the show for its Batman projects.

Making it a theatrical release also helps ensure that both Robins will be seen as prominent DCU characters. Despite the many Batman movies that have been made in recent decades, there has been a frustrating lack of Robin. This will make it all the more satisfying to see not only one Robin, but two versions of the character sharing the screen in a theatrical movie. If Dynamic Duo is successful, this could lead to further DCU animated movies being released in theaters.

Our Take On Dynamic Duo

The DCU Is Doing Right By Animation And Robin

Dynamic Duo makes the DCU even more exciting than it already was and is a particularly rewarding announcement for fans of animation and of Robin. The DCU can benefit from having some of its animated stories not only available on Max, but first available to watch in theaters. While there has been some skepticism about the DCU, Dynamic Duo is the perfect example of the rebooted universe's enormous potential, and how Gunn is taking full advantage of new storytelling and long overdue storytelling opportunities.

The DC Universe is one of the biggest comic book franchises and often competes with Marvel. DC Comics started as National Allied Publications, founded by Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson in 1935. Since then, the franchise has exploded with thousands of comic books, movies, TV shows, and video games. 2013 marked the beginning of the most recent iteration of the superheroes, with Zack Snyder introducing Henry Cavill as Superman. After several movies with mixed reviews, DC underwent a soft reboot under the helm of James Gunn and Peter Safran.
