Summary

  • Daredevil will make his return in the Marvel streaming series Echo, which promises a darker and more violent tone, similar to Netflix's Daredevil.
  • Echo's first trailer showcases an R-rated (TV-MA) rating, highlighted by intense fight scenes and the brutal aftermath of the action.
  • Daredevil: Born Again could benefit from adopting the tone and fight scenes of Echo, considering the success and popularity of Netflix's Daredevil.

Daredevil will return in the Marvel streaming series MCU's Daredevil: Born Again. With both Matt Murdock and his arch-nemesis Wilson Fisk (Vincent D'Onofrio) first returning in 2024's Echo, the series looks like a major change from their post-Netflix cameo roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Echo focuses upon the deaf Native American protagonist Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox), who crosses paths with D'Onofrio's Kingpin again after their previous brutal showdown in Disney+'s Hawkeye series (which raises questions about how Kingpin is still alive after Hawkeye.) Echo will debut simultaneously on both Disney+ and Hulu, but that's not the only attribute to stand out in its forthcoming release. Based on the first trailer for Echo, the show will also take on a much darker, more violent tone and style right in line with Netflix's Daredevil.

Echo's R Rating Credentials Are A Shocking Positive

's first trailer emphasizes its R-rated (or, more accurately, TV-MA) bona fides right from the jump, with Wilson Fisk unleashing his rage on unfortunate enemies, with Fisk's punches and grunts of fury fittingly echoing on the soundtrack. Echo's trailer is no less emphatic with respect to the power and fighting skill of Maya herself, showing glimpses of Maya battling henchmen in fight scenes as flashy as they are savage. Additionally, Echo's trailer also sprinkles in other teases of just how mature the show's tone will be.

Apart from the generally dark, ominous tone present throughout the Echo trailer, it also includes numerous shots of the bloody aftermath of the show's action scenes, such as blood covering Fisk's hands to bloody-faced henchmen who may or may not still be alive. The Echo trailer also shows Fisk with an eye-patch near the end, owing to his previous confrontation with Maya on Hawkeye. There is simply no tonal ambiguity to be found in Echo's trailer - as the first major marketing push for the series, Marvel Studios clearly is striving to emphasize that Echo is far from the usually family-friendly tone of most MCU movies and Disney+ shows.

Daredevil: Born Again Needs To Be More Like Echo

Is Daredevil in Echo?

Ahead of his role on Echo, Daredevil's proper return to the MCU fold has also taken a sharp left turn with the forthcoming Daredevil: Born Again undergoing a near-total creative overhaul. While the most practical (if unlikely) solution would be to simply rework Born Again into a proper Daredevil season four, Echo's trailer displays an equally compelling template for the re-structuring of Born Again. Echo's fight scenes and general tone are strikingly close to those of Netflix's Daredevil and all of Netflix's Marvel shows, which also makes Daredevil's appearance on Echo all the more intriguing.

Even if Daredevil: Born Again is not a direct continuation of Netflix's Daredevil, the latter's popularity and Daredevil generally being a darker Marvel character suggests that Born Again would be well-served by its predecessor's tone and fight scenes, along with uncontrollable rage of D'Onofrio's Kingpin. As evidenced by its trailer, Echo seems to have learned the lessons that made Netflix's Daredevil a success. Daredevil: Born Again would be wise to do the same.

Daredevil: Born Again follows blind lawyer Matt Murdock, who uses his heightened abilities to pursue justice in New York. As he manages a bustling law firm, former mob boss Wilson Fisk navigates political ambitions, leading both men toward a confrontation as their pasts resurface.
