Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Picard Finale - "The Last Generation"Star Trek: Picard season 3's breakout star Ed Speleers describes what it was like playing Jack Crusher meeting Q (John de Lancie). Written and directed by Terry Matalas, Picard's season 3 finale, "The Last Generation," wrapped up the story of Star Trek: The Next Generation in an emotional and satisfying way. Meanwhile, Ensign Jack Crusher, iral Jean-Luc Picard's (Patrick Stewart) son, takes his place aboard the new USS Enterprise-G, where he gets a surprise visit from Q.

Ed Speleers gave an in-depth interview to end-credits scene of Picard's finale, Speleers described what it was like to film the scene and was effusive in his praise for John de Lancie. Read his quote below:

“He’s royalty in Star Trek canon. He is absolute royalty and a very lovely, astute man. Obviously, we just had that one scene; it was a great scene to be had because he’s quite catlike in a scene. I don’t know if that’s him as a character or that’s him as him.

"We didn’t have much within it. It’s only three, four lines each, something like that, but we both pushed each other to try and do it as many different ways as possible. That’s great when you got an actor that you get the chance to do that. Just keeps it fresh and it also keeps you on your toes.”

Jack Crusher Picard Finale

Star Trek: Picard showrunner Terry Matalas previously told Screen Rant that he only had 20 minutes to film Jack Crusher and Q's end-credits scene, which was shot during the production of episode 9, "Vox." However, Q paying the son of Jean-Luc Picard an unexpected visit - especially since Q was believed to have died at the end of Star Trek: Picard season 2 - sets up major ramifications for Matalas' proposed spinoff, Star Trek: Legacy. As Q told Ensign Crusher, he has a destiny of galactic import akin to Jean-Luc Picard's.

Ed Speleers certainly enjoyed working with John de Lancie in Star Trek: Picard season 3, however briefly. The inimitable de Lancie is a beloved recurring guest star in Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Voyager, and Star Trek: Picard, and John's many scenes with Patrick Stewart and Kate Mulgrew's Captain Kathryn Janeway were reliably electric and entertaining. Q making more returns to pester Jack Crusher in Star Trek: Legacy would keep up this tradition of the omnipotent being matching wits with a Picard. Star Trek: Picard's finale end-credits scene was but a tantalizing taste of what's hopefully to come.
