Summary

  • Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright are teaming up for a new movie that is not related to their Cornetto trilogy.
  • Pegg wants to make a movie that is different from their previous comedies and will challenge audiences.
  • The next movie could be of any genre and may not necessarily be a comedy, but it will likely have the same high-quality storytelling as the Cornetto trilogy.

Simon Pegg has confirmed that he is teaming up with writer and director Edgar Wright to make a new movie, which will be unconnected to the Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy. Pegg and Wright have previously teamed up on the comedic Cornetto trilogy, which includes the movies Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World's End. All three films were written by Pegg and Wright, with Pegg starring in the movies while Wright directed them.

Speaking with Discussing Film (the interview happened before the SAG-AFTRA strike), Simon Pegg confirmed that he is working on another movie with Wright that is unconnected to their Cornetto trilogy. Pegg teased the feature will likely be different from the duo's comedy trilogy, indicating he wants to make a movie audiences will have to think deeply about. Check out what Pegg had to say below:

We’ve always done original ideas, even though we’ve kind of built them around existing genres or whatever. Edgar and I are always talking about what we’re going to do next. Neither of us can believe it’s been 10 years since The World’s End. But because our careers have obviously changed and we’re not just sitting around writing zombie films like we used to, the real problem now is about syncing our diaries up at a time when we can both sit down and write a film. And then obviously shoot it. I’ll say this, it’s not about if but when we will do something, which we will do because we’ve already started talking about it.

Edgar came over to my house last year and we started kicking ideas around. It’s not going to be another sort of Cornetto film in that those movies were specifically genre riffs, which addressed the idea of the collective versus the individual. There are certain kinds of thematic consistencies between those three movies which make them a trilogy – it’s not just the ice cream, it’s a series of connecting thematic details. With what do next, we want to be completely different from that. We don’t want to do a take on action movies or a take on sci-fi or a take on horror. We want to make a movie that is totally its own thing, existing outside of the Cornetto trilogy. My desire, really, is to do something super different.

At the risk of disappointing people, we get a lot of requests to “sequalize” all three of those movies. I feel like it’s a lazy impulse for people to embrace familiarity and just accept the same thing again. I’m very flattered by it, and it’s never anything but edifying to be to have people say, “Oh, we would love to see more.” I get that! But what we really need is new stuff. We need new ideas. We need to be challenged. You know, my favorite of the Cornetto trilogy is The World’s End because it’s the least audience friendly. It’s the darkest of the three. It’s the most challenging, and I love the idea of actually putting the audience in a position where they have to feel a little bit uncomfortable and not necessarily cozy into the familiar. So whatever we do next, it’ll be difficult that’s for sure.

What Could Simon Pegg & Edgar Wright's Next Film Look Like?

Nicholas and Danny in a pub in Hot Fuzz

Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy's name originates from the different flavors of the Cornetto ice cream cones that appear in all three movies. The appearance of different types of Cornetto ice cream cones in Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and At World's End connect the movies thematically. This is despite all three films having wildly different premises, with Shaun of the Dead and At World's End, in particular, tackling the end of the world.

Pegg teasing a film that takes place outside the Cornetto trilogy means it could be a movie of any genre. Shaun of the Dead was a zombie story, Hot Fuzz was a crime procedural action film, and The World's End was an apocalyptic movie. However, all three movies were comedies at their core. If Pegg and Wright's next movie is different enough, then it's possible their collaboration won't be a comedy.

No matter how Pegg and Wright's next movie plays out, it will likely have the same high-quality storytelling the Cornetto trilogy is known for. From early Hot Fuzz dialogue revealing its killer twist to the genre-bending At World's End, it's clear Wright and Pegg could tell an engaging story no matter what the genre is. It remains to be seen what Simon Pegg and Wright's next film will be about, but chances are it will be just as entertaining as the Cornetto trilogy.
