The Suikoden series has always been known for its impressively large casts of characters: the original Suikoden had 60 recruitable party . Suikoden mixes typical turn-based RPG systems with large-scale, tactical battle systems. Games in the series tend to focus on small rebellions that snowball into all-out wars as the player recruits more characters, and Eiyuden Chronicle will likely follow a similar plot.

Suikoden is loosely based on (and uses the Japanese title of) Water Margin, a 14th-century Chinese novel about a group of 108 disparate outlaws who unite in rebellion against the government.
