After a long wait, Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes is finally coming soon. A turn-based RPG by legendary director Yoshitaka Murayama, Eiyuden Chronicle has been in development since 2020 - although it's arguably been decades in the making. With gorgeous 2.5D graphics, a lush score, and a cast of characters as diverse as its title implies, Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes looks to be a total throwback to the golden age of turn-based RPGs, a rarity in the modern era.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes was funded via Kickstarter, where it greatly exceeded all its funding targets. As a result, a ton of new content was promised for the final game via stretch goals. In short, despite multiple delays, Eiyuden Chronicle is a much bigger, more richly featured game than expected.

When Eiyuden Chronicle Comes Out

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes will be released on April 23, 2024, across all platforms. This comes after a series of delays: after it was funded on Kickstarter in 2020, it was first scheduled for October 2022, but was later pushed back to 2023 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was delayed again until 2024, but with a concrete release date, during a Nintendo Direct in September 2023.

However, in what may have been an effort to assuage concerns over delays, developer Natsume Atari put out a prequel - Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising - in 2022. Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising is available on all the same platforms as Hundred Heroes, and costs $14.99 USD. It provides about 12 hours of gameplay amid a brief introduction to Eiyuden's world, characters, and systems. Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising earned Screen Rant's approval upon its release.

There will be unique rewards for those with Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising save data on the platform where they play Hundred Heroes, so it's recommended to play the prequel first.

These are only 42 of the promised 110 characters, which means more than half of them have yet to be revealed. Still, the variety in Eiyuden Chronicle's playable cast is already on display. They range in age from 7 to 300. Some are humans, some are anthropomorphic animals, at least one is an undead skeleton king. All three main characters from Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising (Garoo, CJ, and Isha) are returning for Hundred Heroes, along with several side characters.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes - Gameplay & Story Details

Characters walk a narrow grassy cliff in key art from Eiyuden Chronicle.

Suikoden series, a classic RPG franchise that flourished on the original PlayStation. It was created by Yoshitaka Murayama, who returns as director of Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes. The Suikoden series has always been known for its impressively large casts of characters: the original Suikoden had 60 recruitable party . Suikoden mixes typical turn-based RPG systems with large-scale, tactical battle systems. Games in the series tend to focus on small rebellions that snowball into all-out wars as the player recruits more characters, and Eiyuden Chronicle will likely follow a similar plot.

Suikoden is loosely based on (and uses the Japanese title of) Water Margin, a 14th-century Chinese novel about a group of 108 disparate outlaws who unite in rebellion against the government.

Although Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes's story isn't directly connected to Suikoden, it'll likely pick up where Rising left off, with New Nevaeh slowly but surely recovering from disaster, while CJ, Garoo, and Isha navigate a world forever changed by their terrible discovery in the ruins below.

Besides exploration, recruitment, and battle, Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes will also include several mini-games. Cooking, fishing, Beyblade-esque top battles, bartering, Eggfoot racing, card games, farming, and one-on-one dueling will all serve as both distractions from and augments to the main story.

Many of Eiyuden Chronicle's mini-games were added as stretch goals during its Kickstarter campaign.

That's everything to know about Eiyuden Chronicle for now - the rest, including 68 more characters, will have to wait until after release. Players who haven't started yet still have plenty of time to catch up on the prequel. Fans have been waiting four years for Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes - it won't be much longer now.
