Some armaments in Elden Ring will require players to gather Somber Smithing Stones, which they can buy from vendors by acquiring all Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearings. Although many of the game’s weapons will require regular Smithing Stones to be upgraded, many of the armaments acquired through bosses' remembrances will require Somber Smithing Stones.
A major difference between Somber Smithing Stones and the regular variety is that players only need one of each rank to fully upgrade their armaments. Additionally, equipment that requires Somber Smithing Stones is only upgradable to +10, meaning players will only need 10 (one from each rank) to max it out.

How To Use Somberstone Miner's Bell Bearings
Seek Out The Twin Maiden Husks
Since this process requires so few materials, it is possible to upgrade a Somber Armamament to +9 at the very beginning of the game without having to kill a single boss, and it is also important to note that you can buy the first few ranks of Somber Smithing Stones from Master Iji without having to find a single Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing.
However, when you do have them, the Somberstone Miner's Bell Bearings can be given to the Twin Maiden Husks in Elden Ring's Roundtable Hold to allow you to buy Somber Smithing Stones.
Each rank of the Miner’s Bell Bearings will unlock two ranks of Somber Smithing Stones, but the last will only unlock rank nine, as the final material required to upgrade an armament fully, the Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone, cannot be repeatedly bought in Elden Ring. The Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone is one of the rarest upgrade materials, as each playthrough only provides the opportunity to find a total of eight.

Elden Ring: Where To Find Smithing Stones
Smithing Stones, materials for upgrading gear in Elden Ring, can be found in multiple areas, and players can farm the stones in specific locations.
Where To Find Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing [1] In Elden Ring
Defeat A Fallingstar Beast In Caelid
The first Miner’s Bell Bearing can be acquired by defeating the Fallingstar Beast in the Sellia Crystal Tunnel in the easternmost region of Elden Ring called Caelid. Getting to this location is relatively easy, as players just need to head to the southern part of the lake in Limgrave, which is east of the First Step Site of Grace.
There, they will find the Dragon-Burnt Ruins, and in the middle of the camp, a set of stairs leads to a chest that transports players to the Crystal Tunnel. After that, proceed further into the mines to find the mist gate leading to the boss.
This boss can be extremely difficult, especially during the early game, as it is very resistant to physical damage and is quite large for the arena players to fight it in. It is advisable to keep the Fallingstar Beast away from the middle since, during the second phase, it will start doing a big area-of-effect attack around it that can cover most of the room if poorly placed.
Those wishing to skip this Miner’s Bell Bearing during the early game in Elden Ring won’t lose much, as they can instead find Master Iji in Liurnia of the Lakes, who sells an unlimited number of the two first ranks of Somber Smithing Stones and a few of ranks four and five.

Elden Ring's Fallingstar Beast has the same head as Astel, which lends credence to the theory that they are at different parts of the same life cycle.

Defeat A Dungeon Boss Duo In The Atlus Tunnel
To get the second Miner’s Bell Bearing, players must first reach Altus Plateau by acquiring the two halves of the medallion or going through the Ravine-Veiled Village. Players who wish to avoid boss fights should prevent the latter, as that path will eventually lead them to Magma Wyrm Makar. Players can find the left half of the medallion in Fort Haight in eastern Limgrave, Elden Ring's starting region, and the right half in Fort Faroth in Caelid. In both instances, the items can be looted from a chest located atop the fort.
After getting to Altus Plateau, players should be able to easily find and reach the Altus Tunnel, where they will have to fight a boss duo of a Crystalian Spearman and a Ringblade-using Crystalian to obtain the Somberstone Miner's Bell Bearing [1] .
These bosses are highly resistant to most forms of damage until players break their poise and critically hit them, which will heavily lower their defenses. To break an enemy’s poise, players must perform charged or heavy jump attacks as constantly as possible since enemies start to recover poise after getting hit.

Loot From A Body Near The First Church Of Marika
The third Miner’s Bell Bearing is the first that is not looted from a boss in Elden Ring but will instead require players to defeat several to get to it. This is because the item must be looted from a body near the entrance to the First Church of Marika, in the Mountaintops of the Giants, a late-game area.
Players will need the Rold Medallion to use the Grand Lift of Rold to get there. This item is given to the player by Melina after they defeat Morgott, the Omen King, who himself can only be faced after players defeat the golden shade of Godfrey, the First Elden Lord in Leyndell, the Royal Capital.

Loot From A Body Near Tempest-Facing Balcony Site Of Grace
Acquiring the fourth Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing will require you to proceed to the final stage of the game, which is set in Crumbling Farum Azula. To reach this region, you will need to defeat the Fire Giant in Elden Ring, found at Flame Peak in the Mountaintops of the Giants.
After that, players must use the Site of Grace and, depending on players’ previous choices, either talk to Melina or “Listen to the sound of flames” to be teleported to Crumbling Farum Azula. After that, simply progress through the area until reaching the Tempest-Facing Balcony Site of Grace and loot the corpse on the ledge nearby.

Loot From A Body Near The Great Bridge Site Of Grace
The final Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing is also located near Crumbling Farum Azula but to the northeast inside a small church. Starting from the Dragon Temple Rooftop Site of Grace, jump down the rooftops and head southeast towards the dragon that spawns red lighting on the ground.
Then, head west to proceed under a giant archway and follow the narrow path on the right that leads to a ravine. Use the crumbling white tower to get to the other side, where you will find the small church inside it, the last Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing in Elden Ring.
