Unlike in Elden Ring's pop-up tutorials whenever they want. The pop-up tutorials in Sekiro were quite extensive, offering tips about movement options, various attacks, menu navigation, items, upgrades, and more. Players did find one aspect of the on-screen lessons frustrating, however - tutorials were no longer accessible in-game after their first appearance.

Some players didn't mind the inconvenience, preferring to instead master the systems sans any extra guidance. In fact, many a fan who ventured through the game a second time wanted FromSoftware to provide menu options that deactivated the tips outright. (PC mods later brought such a request to fruition.) On the opposite end of the spectrum were players who wanted to leisurely access Sekiro's pop-up messages at any given moment. FromSoftware's RPG has something special in store for those who like perusing through tutorials.

Speaking with Indonesian outlet JagatPlay (via GamingBolt), FromSoftware's Yasuhiro Kitao said the team isn't sure if Sekiro: Shadow Die Twice's tutorials were well-received. Still, the developers believe pop-up tutorials, in general, can prove quite effective. "So we wanted to bring those same elements to Elden Ring, relying on tutorial pop-ups with images and text," Kitao told JagatPlay, according to a Google translation. He went on to divulge that, unlike Sekiro, Elden Ring's pop-up messages won't permanently vanish. "We’re going to summarize [the] tutorial into items that gamers can access, so they can reread it whenever they want." As of writing, how exactly this process will play out in-game is unknown.

Pop-up tutorials themselves aren't exactly familiar territory for the Soulsborne games. But Elden Ring is taking a different tact entirely, offering an RPG experience that should feel more accessible to a wider audience. Of course, FromSoftware's success on this front won't be apparent until the title releases early next year.

The developer and publisher Bandai Namco announced Elden Ring over two years ago during E3 2019. After a lengthy bout of silence, the project returned to the public eye a few months ago, complete with official gameplay footage and a January 2022 due date.
