The hit Netflix rom-com series Emily in Paris made its triumphant return with season 4 in August 2024, and now the series has scored a renewal for season 5. Debuting in 2020, the show follows a young American named Emily as she moves to Paris to work for a high-end marketing firm. Throughout Emily's first few years in the French capital, she found love, heartbreak, and more than a few romantic twists and turns, and it's clear that Emily's path toward true love is anything but easy.

Emily in Paris season 4 was split into two parts, which also created a natural crescendo at mid-season that had an impact on part 2. Emily's will-they-won't-they with Gabriel took the next step as the couple declared their love officially, but they were back on the outs by season 4's finale. In perhaps the biggest shock of all, the series is seemingly setting up for a big move to Rome, and the future of the Paris-based show could shift forever. With all of that looming over the next season, Netflix wasted no time when renewing Emily in Paris season 5.

Considering the show's relocation to Rome, interest is higher than ever in the romantic comedy series.

The writing was on the wall that Emily in Paris would score a season 5 renewal sooner rather than later, and Netflix made their official announcement just days after season 4 part 2's premiere. This speaks to the tremendous popularity of the series, and Netflix was smart to strike while the iron was hot, and order more episodes. Considering the show's relocation to Rome, interest is higher than ever in the romantic comedy series. It was later announced that filming will begin in May 2025, and that both Paris and Rome will be the setting.

Netflix went to their official X (formerly Twitter) and posted a photo of Allen drinking espresso from an Emily in Paris cup.

Who Will Return For Season 5?

Though the full extent of season 5 isn't known yet, there are several logical returns for the cast of Emily in Paris season 5, including the eponymous character who will once again be played by Lily Collins. The show is nothing without its love story, and it has been confirmed that Lucas Bravo will be back as Gabriel. Emily's best friend Mindy (Ashley Park) should also be expected in season 5.

One major departure is that of Camille Razat as Camille, the central antagonist left at the end of season 4, and she won't be returning in the next installment. Though Emily seemingly moved on from him in season 4, it has also been confirmed that Lucien Laviscount's Alfie has now been upgraded as a recurring character, so he'll play a larger part in season 5. Since she's in Rome for season 5, it's all but guaranteed that Eugenio schini will be back as Emily's newest beau, Marcello.

The move to Rome (for at least some of the time) will also necessitate the introduction of some new characters - as Emily oversees the opening of a Rome office for the agency, she will presumably need to hire at least one or two people, opening the door for new recurring characters to appear.

Add Marcello to the mix, and a love triangle has turned into something much more complex in Emily in Paris season 5.

Though Emily in Paris has never shied away from shocking endings, the conclusion of season 4 part 2 might have the most profound impact on the show's future thus far. Pursuing new business opportunities, and her new love Marcello, Emily makes the decision to relocate to Rome from Paris. It's already been confirmed that season 5 will make the jump to Rome, and this could offer a chance for the story to reset a bit. This will also allow for some more focus on Emily's professional life, as the opening of the Rome office is a big step up for her career.

However, Darren Star has confirmed that while she will be spending some of her time in Rome, the entire show will not be leaving Paris. In an interview with Deadline, Starr said:

She didn’t change her Instagram handle to Emily in Rome. She is working in Rome sometimes. Sylvie’s company has an office in Rome. Emily’s getting that on its feet. I don’t necessarily think that it means a permanent—in my mind, it’s definitely not a permanent—move to Rome. We’re not leaving Paris."

However, Emily and Gabriel continued their will-they-won't-they right up to the conclusion of season 4, and this means he'll likely pursue her across international borders as well. In the same interview, Star reveals that the chef may feel he's made a big mistake:

I think Gabriel realized that he doesn’t want to let Emily go so easily, and he might have made a big mistake. They certainly had a big fight and a cooling off period. But I think he realized that by the end of the season, that there’s something that he doesn’t want to let Emily go. I don’t know what that means. Doesn’t necessarily mean they’re going to be together instantly or ever. I don’t know, but I think he feels there’s unfinished business with the two of them.

As for Gabriel, his quest to achieve a Michelin star was a success, but his longing for Emily might put his professional development at risk as he chooses love over career. With Alfie being promoted to a series regular in season 5, he may play a much larger part in Emily's love life as well. Add Marcello to the mix, and a love triangle has turned into something much more complex in Emily in Paris season 5.
