The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has recently unveiled the nominations for the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards. These awards recognize the very best achievements in the 2021-2022 television season spanning network, cable, and streaming. The nominates were led by HBO's Ted Lasso.
That being said, there were still notable snubs that fans have been dismayed by, including the lack of nominations for the ever-popular Stranger Things cast. But while there may be some controversy, there are still stars coming out on top with multiple nominations to their name thanks to their incredible creative breadth.
Zendaya
Over the last decade, Zendaya has risen to be one of her generation's brightest and most beloved superstars. After honing her skills on Disney Channel's Shake it Up and K.C. Undercover, the multi-hyphenate has conquered both TV and film with memorable turns in Euphoria.
The TV Academy loves Zendaya as she breaks record after record. For the first season of Euphoria, she became the youngest woman and second black woman to win Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. This year, she received four nominations for Euphoria's second season - Outstanding Lead Actress, Outstanding Drama Series, and two nominations in Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics for "Elliot's Song" and "I'm Tired".
Sydney Sweeney
After appearing in critical favorites, Sharp Objects, actress Sydney Sweeney rose to fame for her role as Cassie Howard in HBO's Euphoria. Since then, she's played notable roles in the films Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Nocturne, and The Voyeurs.
Sweeney lit up the internet and provided fodder for some of the biggest memes of the year with her performance as Cassie in the second season of Euphoria. Emmy voters were also taken, nominating her for Outstanding ing Actress in a Drama Series. The went even further with an additional nomination for Outstanding ing Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for her turn as Olivia in The White Lotus.
Bill Hader
Bill Hader became a household name with his run on Saturday Night Live, taking on impression after impression and developing the iconic character of Stefon. In addition, he's popped up in numerous films, guest starred on various TV shows, and co-created the mockumentary series Documentary Now!.
Hader is one of the hardest working and - evident by his Emmy nominations - beloved names in the industry. With his work on Barry, Hader received four nominations this year for Outstanding Lead Actor, Writing, Directing, and Comedy Series. On top of that, he's also nominated for Outstanding Guest Actor for playing all three titular characters in the Curb Your Enthusiasm episode "Igor, Gregor, & Timor".
Jason Bateman
Jason Bateman has established himself as one of the great comedic actors of our time. From his early days in TV sitcoms Silver Spoons and The Hogan Family, to roles in hit films like Dodgeball, Arrested Development, Bateman is a go-to talent.
In recent years, Bateman has transitioned from the comedic world to the darkest of dark dramas. With Ozark, Bateman has received numerous recognitions from the TV Academy including nominations this year for Outstanding Lead Actor, Directing, and Drama Series. He is a previous winner for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series for directing the Ozark Season 2 episode "Reparations".
Julia Garner
Starting with smaller roles in critical successes like Martha Marcy May Marlene and The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Julia Garner has blossomed into one of the most fascinating actors of her generation. She has earned accolades after accolades for her TV work in Ozark and numerous nods for her lead performance in the film The Assistant.
Garner is one of Netflix's most reliable talents, earning acting nominations for two of the streamer's hit series. For her turn as Anna Delvey in Inventing Anna, Garner received a nod for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. In addition, she returns to Outstanding ing Actress in a Drama Series one last time having previously won twice for her role as Ruth Langmore in Ozark.
Quinta Brunson
Writer, producer, comedian, and actress extraordinaire Quinta Brunson got her start by creating web content on Instagram and later for Buzzfeed. After Buzzfeed, Brunson appeared on a number of TV shows culminating in co-starring and co-writing on the first season of A Black Lady Sketch Show. Just this year, she broke out as one of TV's greatest multi-hyphenates with her mockumentary Abbott Elementary.
In its first season, Abbott landed seven nominations at the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards. As the creator, executive producer, writer, and star, Brunson's name is all over Abbott Elementary. She made history as the first black woman to receive comedy nominations for Outstanding Writing (for the "Pilot"), Lead Actress (for playing the quotable spunky second-grade teacher Janine Teagues), and Comedy Series in one year.
Jerrod Carmichael
Jerrod Carmichael has proven to be one of the most prominent comedic minds of the 21st century. He rose to fame through stand-up, developing three specials - Love at the Store (directed by Spike Lee), 8 and Rothaniel (both directed by Bo Burnham). Additionally, he starred in, co-wrote, and co-created the critically acclaimed NBC sitcom The Carmichael Show.
In April of 2022, Carmichael was the talk of the town. He hosted Saturday Night Live for the first time just days after releasing his confessional stand-up special Jerrod Carmichael: Rothaniel. Both were massive successes, resulting in a pair of Emmy nominations. For hosting SNL, he was nominated for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series and for his special, he received a nod for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special.
Steve Martin
Hollywood legend Steve Martin has one of the most storied and celebrated careers in the industry. The comedian has sold-out national comedy tours, starred in many classic comedies of the 80s and 90s, produced numerous bluegrass albums, wrote the book and score to the Broadway musical Bright Star, and holds 5 Grammys and an Honorary Academy Award.
As one of the lead creative minds behind Hulu's hit freshman series Only Murders in the Building, Martin received three nominations for Outstanding Comedy Series, Writing for the episode "True Crime", and Lead Actor for playing TV has-been Charles-Haden Savage. Incredibly, Martin only has one career Emmy win - Outstanding Writing Achievement in Comedy, Variety or Music back in 1969 for The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour.
Rhea Seehorn
For years, Rhea Seehorn has popped in and out of television series including main and recurring roles in the shows I'm with Her, Franklin & Bash, and Whitney. Her big break came in 2015 when she was cast as lawyer Kim Wexler in the Breaking Bad spin-off Better Call Saul.
It took five seasons but after years of delivering some of the best quotes on Better Call Saul and egregious snubbing from the TV Academy, Seehorn finally received a nomination for Outstanding ing Actress in a Drama Series for her role as Kim. Additionally, she received a nomination for Outstanding Actress In A Short Form Comedy Or Drama Series for AMC's online series Cooper's Bar.
Nicole Byer
It is nearly impossible to escape the name, Nicole Byer. The comedian has turned into one of the most cherished names in entertainment. On top of her stand-up, she's appeared in numerous TV shows and films, hosts reality TV shows like Nailed It! and Wipeout, and hosts a trio of podcasts, Why Won't You Date Me? , Best Friends, and Newcomers.
Byer has slowly cemented herself as an Emmy favorite. Recognized for her work on Nailed It!, this year's nomination for Oustanding Host for a Reality or Competition Program is her third consecutive bid in the category. Additionally, her Netflix comedy special Nicole Byer: BBW (Big Beautiful Weirdo) earned Byer a nomination for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special.
