- Encanto received rave reviews for its enchanting incorporation of magical realism and focus on cultivating interpersonal relationships, which resonated deeply with viewers.
Despite an overwhelmingly positive reception to Encanto, the prospects for Encanto 2 are uncertain. Directed by Zootopia creators Jared Bush and Byron Howard, Encanto features original songs written by Lin-Manuel Miranda and boasts a talented voice cast featuring stars Stephanie Beatriz, most well-known for her role as Detective Rosa Díaz in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and John Leguizamo. Though it only grossed just over $200 million worldwide before being released on the streaming platform Disney+, Encanto had huge streaming numbers in 2022, and was the highest-grossing animated film of 2021, so, coupled with its glowing reception, there is a high chance that a sequel is on its way.
The 60th Walt Disney Animation Studios film, Encanto follows Mirabel — the only Madrigal family member without magical powers — as she learns about their family’s past while saving their home from imminent danger and destruction. Encanto opened to rave reviews, with critics praising its enchanting yet heartwarming incorporation of magical realism. In a move copying Pixar’s villain trick, Disney’s Encanto not only moved away from the traditional storytelling conventions but also zoomed in on cultivating interpersonal relationships, which deeply resonated with viewers.
The Latest Encanto 2 News
The latest Encanto 2 news comes from the star of the original. After voicing Mirabel in Encanto, Stephanie Beatriz gave an update on Encanto 2 that suggests there has not been much movement on the sequel. Beatriz bluntly its that "I haven’t heard jack s–t" when it comes to Encanto 2. She goes on to suggest that the busy schedule of directors Jared Bush and Byron Howard could be the reason for the delay suggesting the things might progress when they are finished with other projects.
Beatriz goes on to say that she would happily return for the long-awaited sequel and reveals that there is still a lot of fan interest in Encanto 2. She says "I go to the parks a lot and whenever people recognize me they ask about that too. So I know fans of the film are really, really eager to know if it’s gonna get a sequel." Beatriz also thinks the saga of the Madrigal family can continue and "I think there’s a ton of story to be told."
Encanto 2 Is Not Confirmed
Though Disney has not yet announced any updates for Encanto 2, that does not mean the animation studio has closed the door on the possibility of a sequel. After all, over the recent years, the media giant has crafted Disney animated sequels to their blockbuster releases, including Frozen, which staged Elsa as the Fifth Spirit, Cars, and The Incredibles. Following this pattern, the Colombia-set musical’s positive reviews from both critics and audiences can encourage Disney to produce Encanto 2. It might take a while, similar to Toy Story 4’s long-awaited release, but the possibility of it happening is high.
Encanto 2 Cast
When Disney officially gives the greenlight to the sequel, it seems likely the Encanto 2 cast would feature a lot of returning voice actors from the first movie. Part of what made the first film so successful is the character and feeling the Madrigals were given by the voice cast. Most of them returned to perform in Encanto Live At The Hollywood Bowl as well, so there’s no reason to think Stephanie Beatriz (Mirabel), Diane Guerrero (Isabela), John Lequizamo (Bruno), Jessica Darrow (Luisa), and more wouldn’t return.
Musical maestro Lin-Manuel Miranda has also expressed excitement at getting to develop more story and more music for the family, so it’s likely he would return as well. The creative team behind the movie is also interested in developing a show around the characters. Following the release of the movie, director Jared Bush called the idea of a Disney+ series, “the right thing to do” when speaking with Digital Fix, as it would allow the audience to spend time with more characters, so it sounds like he would be up for telling more Madrigal stories as well.
Encanto 2 Story Details
Encanto 2 story details have not been revealed, but the sequel would likely pick up as the Madrigal family learned what their weakness as a unit was, battling generational pressure and toxicity in the process. Consequently, they were able to rebuild their house, and Mirabel’s gift returned the magic that runs in them. This time, however, each one of the Madrigals had realized their value, even without their powers. Although Encanto’s ending is already satisfying, it still poses promising plot lines that a sequel can explore. With the mountains that protected the secluded village of the Madrigal family now having an opening, their world is literally opened up to new possibilities.
For instance, Encanto 2 can focus on Mirabel leaving the comforts of her home in pursuit of a greater purpose in life, or the sequel can instead dwell on a new generation of the Madrigal family. Some fans have even theorized that an existing member of the family may still turn out to be a villain. Some question if there is a darker road for Encanto's Dolores in the future. Maybe, the sequel can have a time jump, and a significant crisis reunites the remaining family . Encanto 2’s plot has endless possibilities, but whatever story Disney decides on telling must be at par or even exceed the original.
