During an interview with The Wrap that happened before the SAG-AFTRA strike, Beatriz expressed interest in making Encanto 2. The actor revealed that she gets asked about it a lot, but while there may be ways to continue its story, she ultimately has not "heard jack s–t." "I would love to work with them again. That team on that film was so incredible to work with that. I think a lot of [Jared Bush and Byron Howard’s] time right now is being taken up by other stuff... I know Jared and I think Bryon too are working on the second ‘Zootopia’ right now. But I would love to work with them again. I go to the parks a lot and whenever people recognize me they ask about that too. So I know fans of the film are really, really eager to know if it’s gonna get a sequel, I would love to do that... I think there’s a ton of story to be told and there’s so many people that would love to see that, but I haven’t heard jack s–t."
Could Encanto 2 Happen?
Despite a somewhat underwhelming performance at the box office, Encanto thrived on Disney+, where it debuted a month after its initial release. Because it proved successful and was met with positive reception from critics and audiences alike, it's hard to imagine a sequel not getting made. Encanto's soundtrack gained popularity, earning number one on the US Billboard 200 chart, and the movie itself won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
Encanto ended with Mirabel saving her family and their home while mending relationships with Alma (Botero) and Bruno (Leguizamo). Given the mountains appeared to break, Encanto 2 can focus on new events or settings outside of the Madrigals' village. It is worth wondering what else a sequel could touch on and what kind of songs might be included, as Beatriz's comments suggest there is still more to explore.
With how quickly Encanto's engagement grew, there is a demand for a possible follow-up.
