Warning: major spoilers for Enola Holmes 2
The youngest Holmes sibling returned with a new mystery waiting to be solved in Netflix’s Enola Holmes 2, but just like in her first movie, the sequel left a couple of mysteries and unanswered questions. As one of the most popular characters in literature, Sherlock Holmes has been adapted to all types of media for many, many years, and various artists have taken many liberties with the character and his stories. Such is the case of Nancy Springer in her book series The Enola Holmes Mysteries, in which she gave the Great Detective a younger sister, Enola, who follows in the footsteps of her famous brother.
Enola has now made the jump to film thanks to Netflix, and after the success of her first movie in 2020, she’s back with a sequel simply titled Enola Holmes 2. Now a detective-for-hire, potential Enola Holmes 3 could answer.
Where’s Mycroft Holmes?
In the universe of Claflin was unavailable to play Mycroft, and in-universe, a reason for his absence wasn’t given, so it’s understood that Mycroft is busy somewhere else and continues to not have a good relationship with neither Enola nor Sherlock.
Why Does Eudoria Keep Leaving Her Daughter?
Enola becoming a detective is all because Eudoria suddenly left on Enola’s 16th birthday, as seen in the first movie. However, Eudoria left flower cards and other clues that led Enola to hidden money and which pushed her to decode her messages and, hopefully, discover where she was. Enola learned that Eudoria is part of a group of militant suffragettes, but the movie failed to explain why Eudoria and company were building so many bombs and what exactly were their plans – and with that, the actual reason why she left so suddenly. Eudoria returned at the end of Enola Holmes but didn’t answer the question of why she left, nor did she during her brief return in Enola Holmes 2. Eudoria, along with fellow suffragette Edith (Susie Wokoma), broke Enola out of jail, but once they were safe, she left her daughter again, without any explanation.
Will Tewkesbury Become Enola’s Sidekick?
While investigating her mother’s whereabouts, Enola came across Viscount Tewkesbury (Louis Partridge), who was being chased by a man who wanted to kill him, as ordered by his own grandmother. Enola ended up helping him find out who wanted to murder him and why, becoming her first case. Enola and Tewkesbury eventually learned that his grandmother planned it all as she was a staunch traditionalist, and didn’t want him to vote for the Reform Bill. Tewkesbury returns in Enola Holmes 2, where he’s now a reformer in the House of Lords, but he’s also trying his best to win Enola’s heart. By the end of Enola Holmes 2, Tewkesbury and Enola had come clean about their feelings for each other and the young Lord helped her and Sherlock solve the mystery, and with he and Enola now together, he might end up becoming Enola’s sidekick, similar to what Sherlock has with Dr. Watson.
Will Enola & Sherlock Work Together Again?
As mentioned above, Enola and Sherlock ended up teaming up in Enola Holmes 2 as their cases were linked, and together (with Tewkesbury’s help), they found that the mastermind behind both cases was Mira Troy a.k.a. Moriarty (Sharon Duncan-Brewster), leading to her arrest as well as that of Lord McIntyre (Tim McMullan). Enola proved that she’s at the level of her famous brother, and they learned that they don’t need to be alone. However, Enola further confirmed that she wants to make a name for herself and let her actions and talents speak for themselves and not be in her brother’s shadow, which is why she turns down Sherlock’s offer of a partnership – but now that they seem to have one enemy in common, they might cross paths again and work together if they want to bring Moriarty and company down.
Will Moriarty Return (& Will She Be Enola's Villain Or Sherlock's?)
Although Moriarty was arrested, it didn’t take her long to escape. Enola Holmes 2 established that Moriarty had been playing with Sherlock for a while now, but she now also knows that there’s a younger Holmes who is also a detective, and she’s very good at it. Given that Moriarty is Sherlock’s archenemy in Conan Doyle’s stories, it’s unlikely that the Enola Holmes series would forget about her in future movies, so she will surely return in some way – after all, Moriarty is known for manipulating people so he can cover his tracks. What makes Moriarty’s introduction to the world of Enola Holmes more interesting and exciting is that she can be the archenemy of both Sherlock and Enola, but it’s to be seen who she will target first when she returns.
What Does John Watson's Introduction Mean For Sherlock Holmes?
Moriarty wasn’t the only character from Sherlock Holmes’ stories to make his first appearance in Enola Holmes 2. Right at the end, Enola agrees to meet with her brother on Thursday at 4pm, but when the time and day comes, Sherlock finds a man standing at his door, saying that a girl sent him as she told him Sherlock needed a flatmate. This man turned out to be Dr. Watson (Himesh Patel), and Sherlock, after understanding what Enola did, let him in. Watson’s absence in Enola Holmes raised a lot of questions, and so did his surprise appearance at the end of Enola Holmes 2, but his introduction is actually quite exciting. Watson’s introduction could mean that future Enola Holmes movies will see a more book-accurate Sherlock Holmes, who will now have Watson as his sidekick and best friend, and it could also lead to spinoffs focused on this particular version of Sherlock and Watson.
Will Other Sherlock Holmes Characters Be Introduced?
The introduction of Moriarty and John Watson leaves the door open for future Enola Holmes movies to introduce more characters from Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes stories – however, this could take the attention away from Enola and her cases, unless they are changed so that they serve Enola’s story rather than Sherlock’s, as happened with Moriarty, who was a villain for both. Characters like Irene Adler, Mary Morstan, and Colonel Sebastian Moran could make their debut in the world of Enola Holmes, and out of these, the one most likely to appear is Moran, as in the books, he’s Moriarty’s right hand. The future of Enola Holmes looks bright and interesting, and she can meet a variety of characters that will make his cases even more entertaining.
