Henry Cavill’s Sherlock Holmes. As one of the most beloved and popular characters in literature, Sherlock Holmes and his stories have been adapted to all types of media for over a century, and the complicated state of the rights to the character has allowed artists to make major changes to him and his cases. Among those who have given the works of Arthur Conan Doyle a twist is Nancy Springer in her book series The Enola Holmes Mysteries, in which she introduced readers to Enola Holmes, Mycroft and Sherlock’s little sister.
By the time readers meet Enola, Sherlock is already a famous detective, so the spotlight is mostly on her and her own detective adventures, and this was perfectly translated into the movie her missing mother, Eudoria (Helena Bonham Carter), while also helping the young runaway Lord Tewkesbury (Louis Partridge) solve a mystery that threatened the entire country. Enola Holmes was a critical success, making way for a sequel that will see Enola taking on a new case, but this time, she will work alongside her famous brother. However, Enola Holmes 2 has a big Sherlock Holmes mistake to avoid, as this is, ultimately, Enola’s story, not Sherlock’s.
Why Henry Cavill's Sherlock Has A Bigger Role In Enola Holmes 2
Enola Holmes 2 will see the youngest Holmes following in the footsteps of her famous brother and opening her own agency, but her new business isn’t going as she expected, as she’s coming across a lot of prejudices. However, one day she’s approached by a matchstick girl who offers her an official detective job, as she needs to find her missing sister. Enola takes the case but soon finds out that it’s a lot more complicated than it seemed, and she ends up crossing paths with Sherlock himself, who had been struggling with his latest case. Enola will also count on the help of Tewkesbury, Edith (Susie Wokoma), and even her mother, Eudoria.
One of the biggest surprises in Enola Holmes 2 so far is seeing Enola and Sherlock working together, especially after she solved her first case all by herself, but the first movie made it clear that Enola has a closer and better relationship with her famous detective brother than with Mycroft. Sherlock’s current case is what has granted him a bigger role in Enola Holmes 2, as his investigation will lead him to the discovery of his and Enola’s cases being connected, leading them to forces. Speaking to Total Film (via the Holmes siblings to work together, more so after the audience asked to see more of Cavill’s Sherlock after Enola Holmes.
How Enola Holmes 2 Can Avoid Sherlock Overshadowing Enola
As exciting as it is to see more of Cavill’s Sherlock Holmes in Enola Holmes 2 and see him working alongside his sister, at the end of the day this is Enola’s story, not Sherlock’s. Enola Holmes 2 will have to avoid putting too much attention on Sherlock rather than on Enola, her case, and her dynamics with the other characters (especially Tewkesbury and Eudoria). One way to do so could be by making Enola’s case the main one and Sherlock’s the secondary one rather than the other way around, so it’s Sherlock adding to Enola’s efforts rather than her serving as his sidekick. More Sherlock Holmes doesn’t mean taking the spotlight away from Enola, but they can definitely co-exist in their own world.
