Warning: potential spoilers for Enola Holmes 3.

Summary

  • Enola Holmes 3 is expected to be based on the third book in the Enola Holmes book series, The Case of the Bizarre Bouquets, and will focus on the disappearance of Dr. John Watson.
  • Enola Holmes 2 introduced Dr. Watson, who is set to become Sherlock Holmes' flatmate in the movie, providing a natural way for the Holmes siblings to team up.
  • Enola Holmes 3 has already made changes to the book's plot, including Enola no longer hiding in London.

Enola Holmes is coming back with a third adventure, and while the previous movies were loose adaptations of the books starring the youngest Holmes, the source material can give some clues about the story of Enola Holmes 3. Sherlock Holmes and his stories have been adapted to all types of media for many, many years, but there have also been various artists who have made a couple of changes and additions to the Great Detective and his cases to give them new life. Among them is Nancy Springer, who gave Sherlock and Mycroft Holmes a younger sister in her book series The Enola Holmes Mysteries.

Enola is now solving crimes outside the book pages thanks to Netflix’s Enola Holmes movies. Starring Millie Bobby Brown as the young detective, Sherlock (Henry Cavill). Enola Holmes 3 is expected to be based on the third book, and though the previous movies were loose adaptations, the third movie has been set to be closer to the source material.

Enola Holmes' Third Book Is Centered On John H. Watson

Enola Holmes 3 Is Expected to Be Based On The Case of the Bizarre Bouquets

The Enola Holmes Mysteries book series consists of seven books and one short story. Enola Holmes covered the first book, The Case of the Missing Marquess, and the sequel took the second book in the series, The Case of the Left-Handed Lady, as inspiration. Enola Holmes 3, then, is expected to be based on the third book of the series, The Case of the Bizarre Bouquets, though with a couple of changes to fit with what the previous movies have established. However, unlike the previous movies, Enola Holmes 3 has more chances to be more faithful to the source material thanks to what the second movie set up.

Worried about her older brother, Enola sent him a flatmate and potential friend at mid-credits scene of Enola Holmes 2, a man (Himesh Patel) arrived at Baker Street asking for Sherlock, as Enola told him that he was looking for a flatmate. The man was none other than Dr. John Watson, setting up the famous Sherlock/John pair.

Now, The Case of the Bizarre Bouquets is all about the disappearance of Dr. Watson. Enola decides to investigate Watson’s mysterious disappearance and uses her extensive knowledge of flowers to solve the case after discovering a bouquet of flowers intended for Watson. The clues in the symbolism of the flowers and more lead Enola to a mental institution, where Watson had been sent under the belief of him being a mentally unstable man, so Enola has to figure out if Watson is really insane or if someone else is looking to sabotage him. With John Watson now part of the Enola Holmes film universe, Enola Holmes 3 can easily follow the book’s story.

Enola Holmes 3 Has Changed One Massive Part Of The Book's Plot

Enola Holmes 2 Prompted A Key Change In The Third Book's Plot

Enola Holmes 2 Millie Bobby Brown

In both the first movie and book, Enola runs away to London after the disappearance of her mother, Eudoria (Helena Bonham Carter), with the purpose of finding her and running away from her brothers’ plans, as they wanted to send her to a boarding school. Once in London, and in order to escape from her very famous and highly skilled detective brother, Enola uses different disguises and makes herself look older. With time, Enola opens her own agency, as she did in Enola Holmes 2, but in the books, she creates an imaginary employer and poses as his nondescript assistant, Ivy Meshle, in order to not be found by Sherlock.

Enola Holmes 3 is already changing this as the young detective is no longer hiding in London, and she already teamed up with her brother in the previous movie.

Even throughout the events of The Case of the Bizarre Bouquets, Enola continues keeping her location and identity a secret so Sherlock won’t find her, and communicates with him through posts in the newspaper. Enola Holmes 3 is already changing this as the young detective is no longer hiding in London, and she already teamed up with her brother in the previous movie. This change will make it easier for Enola to move around the city to find Watson, as she won’t have to worry about Sherlock (and Mycroft, if he returns) finding out where she is and what she has been doing.

Enola Holmes 3 Can Naturally See Enola & Sherlock Team Together

Dr. Watson's Disappearance Is A Perfect Excuse For A Holmes Siblings Team-Up

Millie Bobby Brown as Enola Holmes stares up at Henry Cavill as Sherlock Holmes in a scene from Enola Holmes 2.

The Enola/Sherlock team-up in Enola Holmes 2 worked well, but Enola Holmes 3 can bring them together in a much smoother way. In Enola Holmes 2, the siblings cross paths as their respective cases turn out to be connected in some way, so they forces to solve them with each other’s help. Watson’s disappearance in Enola Holmes 3 makes it a lot easier for the Holmes siblings to team up again and it does so in a more natural way, as Sherlock’s friend and partner is suddenly missing, and as Enola was the one who sent Watson to Sherlock, she’s already connected to him as well. Enola Holmes 3, then, can have the ultimate Holmes siblings team-up, and it won’t need Mycroft’s presence (much to Enola’s relief).

However, Enola Holmes 3 could be risking turning this new adventure into a Sherlock Holmes story rather than an Enola one. What made the previous movies so interesting and fun was seeing the younger Holmes make a name for herself and learn how to be a detective, though she’s already a natural one. The Holmes siblings team up in Enola Holmes 2 worked because, even though their cases were connected, Enola and Sherlock still focused on their individual cases, thus keeping Enola’s place as the protagonist. Enola Holmes 3 has to be careful in how it handles its Holmes siblings team-up, and it must that the real main character is Enola, not Sherlock.
