Following the resounding success of the first two films, Netflix has announced plans for Enola Holmes 3 which promises to continue the beloved teen detective movie series. Based on the series of novels by Nancy Springer, Enola Holmes, and its sequel, follow the teenage sister of Sherlock Holmes as the eponymous detective (Millie Bobby Brown) uses her sleuthing skills to crack cases that put even her famous brother to shame. Mixing fourth-wall-breaking humor and genuinely intriguing mystery plots, Enola Holmes was a perfect mid-pandemic release for Netflix in 2020.

Critics praised Brown's performance, and the movie as a whole, pointing out its fun atmosphere and unique spin on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes universe (via the cast returned for Enola Holmes 2 in 2022, and the sequel far exceeded expectations by being just as praised as its predecessor and topping Netflix's viewership charts (via Media Play News). Another sequel seemed imminent, but it took until late 2023 for Netflix to offer promidates on Enola Holmes 3.

Filming Begins On The Threequel

Coming several years after the movie was formally announced, the latest news confirms that Enola Holmes 3 is finally filming. Netflix broke the news themselves when they shared a photo on X (formerly Twitter) of star Millie Bobby Brown and co-star Louis Partridge riding together in a golf cart on what appears to be a backlot. The duo isn't in costume, though Partridge is holding flowers in his lap. The still looks as if it's from a larger video, but Netflix hasn't provided any more context for the picture.

Enola Holmes 3 Is Confirmed

The Script Has Been Developing Since 2023

After a year of speculation, Netflix confirmed a script for Enola Holmes 3 was in development in late 2023. Scott Stuber serves as Netflix's Head of Film, and he spoke glowingly of Millie Bobby Brown while labeling her as one of Netflix's "homegrown stars" thanks to her turn as Eleven in the wildly popular Stranger Things. However, it would take another year for more news to surface when director Philip Barantini signed on to oversee the project.

Harry Bradbeer directed the first two films.

It was announced in April 2025 that filming had begun on the threequel, but it is still largely shrouded in mystery. No production timeline has been provided, so it's unclear when the movie will wrap, or when Netflix plans to release it. However, it stands to reason that Enola Holmes 3 won't arrive before the end of 2025, and the earliest it could premiere would be the first months of 2026. However, Netflix will probably want to hold onto the threequel until the perfect time to release it, instead of just dropping it as soon as it's done.

Enola Holmes 3 Story Details

The Movie Series is Following the Book Series With Some Changes

Henry Cavill as Sherlock Holmes holds a magnifying glass in a scene from Enola Holmes 2.

In the novel, Enola avoids being sent to finishing school in order to help locate Dr. John Watson, Sherlock's close friend and associate.

Except for major book changes in Enola Holmes 2, the stories of the movies have followed the book series linearly. Therefore, it is likely that Enola Holmes 3 will follow the plot of Springer's third book, The Case of the Bizarre Bouquets. In the novel, Enola avoids being sent to finishing school in order to help locate Dr. John Watson, Sherlock's close friend and associate.

Enola Holmes 3 will probably add a few additional flourishes and expand upon the hit YA novels, but it's unclear what those changes will be. One big change will likely be her relationship with Sherlock, her overprotective brother, who she had to dodge in the first film. However, the sequel revealed that Enola was unafraid to operate out in the open as a detective, and that could continue in the third film. This could pit Enola and Sherlock head to head as they try to track down Watson.
