Warning: contains spoilers for Eternals #2
In the latest issue of Marvel Comics already killed Prime Eternal Zuras, Thanos has declared war, and one of the strongest Eternals, Ikaris, is set to face off with Thanos in this new issue. However, the aftermath of their battle reveals that there may very well be a traitor among their ranks, which quickly leads to distrust and fracturing now that the Eternals are in danger of their own demise at the hands of Thanos himself.
Thanos sees the Eternals and their immortality as an affront to death, which is something he can no longer abide. While killing Zuras wouldn't normally be any kind of significant problem for the Eternals, Phastos reveals that the processes of resurrection have been broken and rendered inoperable, meaning that death has suddenly become much more permanent until they can fix it, making the threat of Thanos that much more dire. While more duplicitous Eternals such as Druig are keen to select a new Prime Eternal as well as placing blame on Ikaris for the threat of Thanos, the lady Sersi soon arrives, gathering those she trusts most to create a plan.
Sersi's new cabal in Eternals #2 from writer Kieron Gillen with art by Esad Ribić is compromised of Ikaris, Sprite, Phastos, and Kingo, hoping to create some sort of plan to fix the components of resurrection found in the Eternals' Great Machine on Earth. However, they also need to repair it in time before the Machine's failure causes the world's destruction, as their fates are greatly interwoven and tied together thanks to the Eternal's creators known as the Celestials. However, Phastos brings up another problem that's equally concerning: Ikaris found and fought Thanos on Titanos, a realm that only the Eternals should be able to access through the Great Machine. Thanos would have only been able to get there unless an exception was made for him by an Eternal. This confirms that the not-so immortals now have a traitor amongst their numbers.
All things considered, it's doubtful that Sprite is the culprit despite her checkered past, as she's thus far been with Ikaris since the series began when Ikaris was ordered by Zuras himself to release her from the Eternal's Exclusion (a sort of prison). Additionally, it doesn't seem as though Druig would be working with Thanos either. Despite his desires for power and to one day lead as a new Prime Eternal, there have to be Eternals to lead, and Thanos seems dead set on killing them all.
In any case, Thanos' war on the Eternals just became a very big concern, especially now that he had someone on the inside who apparently desires the Eternals' extinction just as much as he does. In any case, the Eternals have just become extremely vulnerable now that their deaths are permanent and the stability of the entire world is at stake. Here's hoping the Eternals will be able to come up with a fix and defensive strategy soon. It seems doubtful that Thanos is going to wait very long until his next attack as the series from Marvel Comics continues.
