Warning: contains major spoilers for Batman/Superman #20!

Etrigan is tired of being used as a side character. Batman/Superman #20 reveals that this antihero has a major gripe with the way he's being employed. Based on his character history, the Demon definitely has a point.

Etrigan the Demon was created by Jack Kirby and introduced in 1972 within The Demon #1. He was the titular character, the Demon. He is bonded to Jason Blood, a knight in King Arthur's court and has been featured in multiple series. Most recently he was part of Justice League Dark and bonded to Detective Chimp. He's a magic that, while not totally left behind in DC's comic history, has been taking a backseat to many other characters.

Batman/Superman #20 has the creative team of Gene Luen Yang, Ivan Reis, and Danny Miki. This issue introduces Etrigan as a new foe for the titular heroes to face as Autuer.io - the primary series' antagonist - calls upon him to destroy the World of Tomorrow. When summoned, however, Etrigan has some complaints to make. These complaints are definitely not unfounded considering his comic history in comparison to his present in recent series - including this one.

etrigan side character

Etrigan's last ongoing series in the short-lived title Demon Knights, he has been merely another minor player in broader stories.

The last major appearance of Etrigan, as mentioned before, was when he was paired with Detective Chimp as a part of Justice League Dark. This was during DC's Future State event. He has also appeared in assorted issues of other DC series that are centered on other, more popular characters, like Superman, Wonder Woman, and Harley Quinn. It has certainly been a while since the Demon led his own long-term series. Quite frankly, it might be time to get back to giving him the reigns back again. With Infinite Frontier, more storytelling possibilities have opened up. This makes it a perfect time to play around with some older characters or characters who have been taking backseat roles as of late. Etrigan definitely falls into this category. He was an instrumental character with Justice League Dark, but as he says, the glory goes to other characters - in that case, it was moreso Wonder Woman and Zatanna who took the spotlight.

By this point, Etrigan is overdue for being the hero of his own story again. He has been yanked around by Jason Blood and connected to unexpected characters, but based on the longevity of the series that came shortly after Etrigan's creation, he clearly has the ability to have his own adventures. This is a particularly good time since DC could use some more horror elements within their new initiative - something it has generally been lacking thus far. DC has amazing characters, but Etrigan has a point - it needs to let others have the spotlight back for a bit - or at least have some independent stories that are disconnected from DC's Trinity.
