Warning: This list contains spoilers for all seasons of The Owl House.

Summary

  • Palismen are familiars that accompany witches in The Owl House and enhance their magical abilities.
  • Palistrom trees, from which witch staffs are traditionally carved, are rare and hunted by the evil Emperor Belos.
  • Each main character in the series has their own unique Palisman guardian, each with their own abilities and significance.

In Dana Terrace's popular animated show The Owl House, the witches are sometimes accompanied by familiars called Palismen. A Palisman forms the head of a witch's staff, a tool used to conduct stronger magic and as a broomstick-like mode of transportation. Luz Noceda longs for a witch's staff of her own from the Pilot episode, but she only gets a staff and a Palisman at the end of the series.

According to Eda the Owl Lady, "traditionally, young witches carve their staffs from the branch of an old Palistrom tree" (season 2, episode 6). However, many of the main characters in The Owl House adopted Palismen because Palistrom trees have become rare in the Boiling Isles. Additionally, the evil Emperor Belos hunts the Palismen, using their magic to extend his own life. This is presumably why not many of the adult witches in the series are seen with their own Palismen.

13 Owlbert

Witch: Eda Clawthorne

Owlbert is the first Palisman to appear in the series and is the lifelong companion of Eda. Owlbert is also the inciting incident of the series because Luz follows him through the portal into the Boiling Isles while he is collecting human items to bring back to Eda. Owlbert contributes to important magic but also plays cards with Eda and helps Luz and King train. It is revealed in season 2, episode 12 that Eda carved Owlbert herself with help from her father Dell. Dell and the Clawthorne family are well-known in the Boiling Isles for their Palismen-carving skills.

12 Raven Palisman

Witch: Lilith Clawthorne

Lilith with her staff in The Owl House

Eda's sister Lilith is seen with a raven Palisman throughout the series, who is never named. Since Eda carved her own Palisman as part of a family tradition, Lilith likely carved hers too. Lilith's Palisman is with her when she leads the Emperor's Coven, although it is not clear how Lilith protected her Palisman from Belos. Lilith is also a ionate historian, and her Palisman accompanies her on various academic missions. Fans have suggested names (via Reddit) for Lilith's Palisman, although a pun on "raven" seems likely, since her mother and sister's Palismen are also named according to their bird forms.

Witch: Gwendolyn Clawthorne

Gwendolyn in The Owl House-1

Hawksley is the hawk Palisman of Gwendolyn, Eda and Lilith's mother. Her husband Dell may have carved the Palisman for her, with or without her help. Not much is known about Hawksley, but he is supposedly unable to talk Gwendolyn out of this. Eda and Luz are the ones to point out Gwendolyn's foolish behavior.

9 Frewin

Witch: Principal Bump

Frewin is described (via The Owl House Wiki) as an "imp-like" Palisman and is the familiar of Hieronymus Bump, the principal of Hexside. Bump reveals in the episode where Bat Queen comes to Hexside that his Palisman is always with him, while the audience may have previously believed this was just Bump's unique design. Bump appears to have been partially or entirely blinded by an injury because one of his eyes is closed and the other is scarred, and Frewin helps him see. Bump is a strict yet caring principal and he and Frewin come to the students' aid when Hexside is invaded in season 2, episode 18.

8 Flapjack

Witch: Hunter

Flapjack is a red cardinal who was originally the Palisman of Caleb but is with Hunter for his time on The Owl House. Caleb was the brother of Philip Wittebane, who became Emperor Belos. The brothers were witch hunters together until Caleb fell in love with the witch Evelyn. Belos then created a long line of "Grimwalkers," or copies of his brother, who he hoped would serve him loyally. They all eventually realized that Belos was evil and were consequently killed by him.

Flapjack finds Hunter, the latest Grimwalker, and becomes his Palisman. Flapjack helps Hunter discover the world outside the emperor's palace and become friends with the rest of the main cast. Flapjack sadly dies saving Hunter in season 3, episode 2. Hunter creates a memorial for Flapjack, which is seen in the series finale. Flapjack's character demonstrates the strength of the bond between a witch and their Palisman.

Witch: Willow Park

Willow and Clover in The Owl House

Clover is a large bumblebee Palisman who lived with Bat Queen for an unknown amount of time before she was adopted by Willow. Willow is the first friend Luz makes at Hexisde and specializes in plant magic. According to the Bat Queen, Willow and Clover are a perfect match because Willow is "tender yet tenacious." Clover helps Willow and the others when they go on missions to save the Boiling Isles, as well as ing Willow in her ion for Flyer Derby.

6 Emmiline

Witch: Gus Porter

Gus in the owl house

Emmiline is a chameleon Palisman who also lived with Bat Queen before being adopted by Gus. She becomes Gus' Palisman after hearing his wish to "become an ambassador to the human realm and reestablish with the giraffes." Emmiline is the only Palisman to have a full name: Emmiline Bailey Marcostimo, revealed by The Owl House's production coordinator (via X). Gus and Emmiline accompany the rest of the main characters on their adventures; they also Willow's Flyer Derby team together.

5 Maya

Witch: Boscha

Boscha in the owl house

Boscha is Hexside's Grudgby star. She initially says that she "wants her own Palisman, not some trashy hand-me-down," but steps up to meet her Palisman after Willow receives hers. When Boscha says that she wants to be a professional Grudgby player, Bat Queen says, "A competitive spirit. Maya will be thrilled." Boscha is then excited when Maya, who takes the form of a crab, becomes her Palisman. Boscha also takes over Hexside when the Collector plunges the Boiling Isles into chaos.

4 Ghost

Witch: Amity Blight

Amity and Ghost in The Owl House

Ghost is a white cat Palisman adopted by Amity Blight. Ghost is not seen among the other Palismen that the Bat Queen brings to Hexside and first appears in season 2, episode 9, helping Amity take care of a sick Luz. Ghost also accompanies Amity when she goes to Eclipse Lake in this episode. Amity is a powerful witch who is described as "classy" by Luz, so a sophisticated feline is an appropriate familiar for her. In season 3, episode 2, Amity tells Luz she only bonded with Ghost by saying, "I don't know what I'm gonna be when I grow up, but I wanna choose the path myself.
