WARNING! This article contains SPOILERS for Evil Dead Rise!

In Evil Dead Rise, it sure seems like Beth’s baby could become a Deadite after the events of the Evil Dead sequel. Evil Dead Rise goes out of its way to match the levels of gore and violence meted out by its franchise predecessors. While Evil Dead II and (in particular) Army of Darkness have a cartoony style that blunted the impact of their gorier moments, Evil Dead Rise is much closer in tone to 1980’s gruesome original Evil Dead and 2013’s terrifying remake of the same name. Like those earlier movies, Evil Dead Rise pulls no punches.

However, despite how gruesome the sequel gets, one of the scariest moments in the Evil Dead Rise ending isn’t shown on-screen. Instead, one disturbing detail is only vaguely implied within the movie itself and otherwise left ambiguous by the gory sequel. In the ending of Evil Dead Rise, the pregnant Beth manages to escape the haunted high rise that her possessed sister Ellie trapped her inside and saves Ellie’s youngest daughter Kassie from the Marauder, the monstrous demonic abomination that her mother has become. However, Kassie’s siblings Danny and Bridget are dead, as is Ellie, and the Necronomicon’s demonic influence survives to infect a new victim.

Can Beth's Baby Turn Into A Deadite? Evil Dead's Scratch Rules Set Up A Gory Twist

Since Beth is pregnant in Evil Dead Rise, there is a chance that her baby will be born a Deadite. Evil Dead Rise’s demonic villain can tell that Beth is pregnant and actively tries to attack Ellie’s unborn baby. Although she doesn’t get as far as tearing her sister open, Ellie does at least cut Beth numerous times during their scuffle. Since even small scratches have been known to turn people into one of the Evil Dead’s villainous Deadites, and Deadite Ellie scratches inside Beth's stomach to try and tear out the embryo, there is a chance that Beth’s baby could become a Deadite before its birth.

ittedly, this chance is pretty slim. After all, Beth herself didn’t become a Deadite, and Ellie scratched her a lot more than she could have scratched her embryo. Not only that, but any injury that would have scratched Beth’s embryo would have needed to puncture her skin, abdominal muscles, and internal organs first, which would have likely left Beth unable to stand (let alone run around the apartment building and fight the Marauder). However, the demonic entities of the Evil Dead franchise don’t necessarily operate via hard and fast logical rules, as evidenced throughout Evil Dead Rise.

Evil Dead Rise's Disturbing Baby Deadite Tease Confirms The Franchise's Scariest New Rule

While the Evil Dead Rise post-credits stinger doesn’t tell viewers anything about a potential sequel, this earlier scene's disturbing implication might give viewers a hint as to where the franchise is heading. A lot of classic horror franchises, from Hostel to Friday the 13th, have opened sequels by killing off the lone survivor of the last movie. As such, Evil Dead Rise could double down on its bleak brutality by killing off Beth via her own Deadite baby in its opening scenes. This would be an utterly cruel twist for the franchise, but it would continue the reveal that absolutely nobody is safe after three kids were already turned into Deadites in Evil Dead Rise.

What Beth's Pregnancy Means For Evil Dead Rise's Future

Being pregnant with a potential Deadite is new territory for a movie lead. Sequels could obviously continue Evil Dead Rise’s themes of motherhood, but now Beth would have to take care of herself, her niece Kassie, and her unborn child. The demon is going to be even more brutal in trying to attack and possess her considering she is watching over three souls and, if Beth's baby is actually born and isn't a Deadite, then that is yet another horrifying big change for her to try to protect an infant from this demon. This could set up Ash’s Evil Dead franchise return, since Beth could seek out a veteran with more experience.

However, it is not yet clear whether Bruce Campbell’s iconic antihero will ever appear in the Evil Dead franchise again, and it could be hard for the series to reintegrate the character. While Evil Dead Rise isn’t as relentlessly hopeless and mean-spirited as 2013’s Evil Dead remake, it is still darker than Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness. Not only that, but Ash Vs Evil Dead - the last Evil Dead property starring the character - was even lighter in tone than those sequels. As such, an Evil Dead Rise sequel could struggle to find the right tone with the Evil Dead hero's involvement, even though his return could save Beth and her baby.
