"Very Scary": Stephen King Praises Recently Concluded Show Again After Star Shares Hope For Renewal

Warning: MAJOR SPOILERS ahead for the Evil series finale!

Summary

  • Katja Herbers, who plays Kristen, came up with the idea of Kristen purposefully hiding Timothy's demonic attributes at the end of Evil season 4.
  • Kristen's complicity complicates her character moving forward, revealing she is aware of the supernatural and adding depth to her relationship with Timothy.
  • Despite being cancelled after season 4, the show's ending leaves room for interpretive possibilities regarding the characters' future.

Evil series finale, Kristen moves her family to Rome to assist David in starting the Vatican's new assessor program overseas. In the final scene, though, she ends up seeing Timothy's eyes turn white before sharp fangs sprout from his mouth, something she swiftly hides with a pacifier before David's arrival. The scene appears to definitively reveal the child's demonic influence to his mother.

Speaking with Deadline, however, King revealed that Herbers, who portrays Kristen in Evil, changed season 4's ending by having Timothy reveal his sharp teeth. While the co-creator originally had the ending portray his demonic attributes with more interpretation, the actor wanted there to be a definitive moment where her character saw something supernatural about him. Check out what King had to say below:

Well, the very end was not in the script.... Originally, it was like Timothy’s eyes turned white, and Kristen looks at it and goes, :is that a trick of the sun or not?” Then she just turns around and goes away with David. Katja was the one who pushed it to: “No, I should see it and see in it something more certain.” I said, “Okay, well, let’s talk to visual effects, we’ll put in teeth too.” And she said, “then I should cover it,” It was all kind of a Katjaism, which is what I call it, a Katjaism, to kind of push the envelope where she’s complicit. It’s not just a trick of the eye. She’s complicit in what’s going on, and I think that made it much more interesting.

How Evil Season 4's Ending Defines Kristen Going Forward

She's Now Aware Of The Supernatural

Throughout Evil season 4, much like every other season of the show, Kristen has been shown to deny supernatural events as explainable phenomena. Her background in forensic psychology makes it difficult for her to believe in unexplained circumstances, continually insisting there's a grounded explanation for everything despite having some experiences proving otherwise. The show's final scene, however, reveals something definitive to her through Timothy's teeth, something she covers up because of the demonic implication. By making her realize her son's demonic connection at the very end, the show complicates her character moving forward.

Although Evil was cancelled after season 4, making the latest episode the series finale, the Kings still had plans for the show that remain sprinkled throughout the finale. However, Herbers making Kristen knowledgeable about Timothy's demonic connection means she's purposefully hiding these attributes from the Church. This keeps the baby from becoming a weapon of war against the 60, or from getting targeted by religious organizations who may want to use him for untoward purposes. However, it also implies a deeper connection for Kristen to the supernatural moving forward.

An Evil spin-off show after the series finale could be the perfect way to keep the show’s magic alive, as long as it includes these elements.

While Evil's cancellation is disappointing, and means there won't be a resolution to how Kristen's complicity impacts the story, the ending allows for an interpretive way of looking at the future of its major characters. Since she's willing to keep Timothy's demonic look a secret from even David, their relationship could take a turn if he discovers the truth. For now, though, it appears the information will be kept secret, unrevealed as the future remains uncertain.

Evil was originally supposed to go until season 6, but was cancelled at season 4.
