The following contains spoilers for Evil season 4 episode 14, "Fear of the End," now streaming on Paramount+Evil's season four finale is also effectively the ending of the fan-favorite horror series, even if it leaves a number of door open for further adventures. Across four seasons, Evil's central trio of psychiatric consultant Kristen Bouchard, priest David Acosta, and inventive contractor Ben Shakir have survived plenty of the worst kinds of threats the world can throw at them. Along the way, they've also confronted the darkest corners of their own mortality and come out the other side stronger and united in the face of evil.

This carries through the series finale, "Fear of the End," which brings back many elements from previous seasons and effectively works as a closing chapter of the series. This includes resolving their long-running conflict with the dangerous Leland, as well as their prickly relationship with the Catholic Church. By the end of "Fear of the End," fans of Evil can rest assured that the war may continue, but a resolution has been reached for the time being. However, there are enough dangling plot threads that a potential season 5 of Evil would have plenty of story to play with.

Why The Assessors Burn Their Case Files In Evil's Ending

The Assessors Don't Trust The Entity — And For Good Reason

The Assessors holding their case files before burning them in Evil's series finale

The series finale of Evil formally breaks up the Assessors that have been at the center of the series, even as their bonds remain intact following the conclusion of the episode. For four seasons, the Assessors have been combating the forces of evil together, all while growing closer as a group. Along the way, they've found themselves increasingly working with groups like the morally dubious but technically noble group known as the Entity. Introduced in season 2 as the Catholic Church’s personal Secret Service organization, they've assisted the Assessors before.

However, the Assessors also have their doubts about the organization, especially after David worked with them in season 3. Although David does share some important information with them about the villainous Sixty, he's wary about revealing the full extent of their missions over the last four seasons. As a result, the Assessors meet up and burn all their files, preventing the Entity from using their knowledge and experience for their own gain. It's a quietly powerful scene that underscores the deep bonds that have formed across the course of the series.

What Happens To The Assessors After Splitting Up In Evil

Just Because They Aren't A Team Anymore Doesn't Mean They've Left Each Other Behind

Evil Season 4 Finale 7

Even if the Assessors are no longer a formal team by the conclusion of Evil, it's clear that their bonds will continue going forward. At the beginning of the finale, all three have seemingly begun the process of moving beyond their old positions. Kristen has resumed her work as a psychologist, helping new patients in her home office. Ben has found profitable work within the tech sector. David remains a priest, and is offered a chance to re the Entity.

Despite not formally being a group anymore, the trio remain a tightly knit group who one another when the VR goggles from Season 1’s “Rose398” show them their greatest fears. This builds to the central threat of the finale, where Leland decides to follow through on the desires of the Sixty and targets Kristen while her daughters are distracted by the VR Goggles. Breaking into the building, Leland is tricked and defeated by the trio, leading to his capture and the ultimate proof that the trio remain a team even if not formally.

Leland's Fate In Evil's Finale Could Allow Him To Return Down The Line

Evil Season 4 Finale 9

Leland has been one of the most compelling parts of Evil since the beginning of the show, serving as the unsettling face of the demonic houses. His rivalry with the Assessors has led to victories and defeats for both sides, but Evil's series finale gives the Assessors a conclusive victory over the Leland and the Sixty. Despite his sneaky attempt to slay Kristen and her son Timothy, Leland is almost killed by Kristen and only spared by David and Ben's belief that they can't resort to his kind of brutality. This sets up Leland's final fate in Evil.

This leads the show back to the silent retreat that was introduced season 2's "S Is For Silent." The trio end up stuffing Leland into the demonic cabinet, leaving Leland alive but incapacitated while Sister Andrea watches over him. It's a good way to give his conflict with the Assessors a satisfying ending, while still leaving the door open for the character to return down the line if Evil were to ever get any more subsequent storylines. Leland has suffered for his crimes, but like the concept of evil itself, he isn't necessarily gone forever.

Why Kristen & David Move To Rome In Evil's Finale

A Promotion For David Means A New Life For Him And Kristen

In the aftermath of the Evil's various conflicts, Father Di Vita tries to bring David back into the fold with the Entity. However, David still doesn't necessarily trust the organization, and instead wants to take control of the Assessor Program as a whole. The finale reveals that David does get his way, resulting in a move to the Catholic Church's base of operations in the Vatican City enclave within Rome. Although he offers Ben and Kristen the chance to him, only the latter decides to go with him.

Even that decision comes slow, with Kristen only relenting after much thought and after deciding to bring her family with her. The sequence highlights the underlying romantic tension between Kristen and David that's been one of Evil's most consistent character relationships. Although their bond remains platonic due to David's commitment to the Priesthood and Kristen's responsibilities to her family, the end of the series reflects the deep connection that has formed between the pair and reinforces it by having Kristen follow him around the world to continue their work.

How Evil's Ending Sets Up A Potential Evil Season 5

Evil's Hypothetical Season 5 Could Become A Kristen Vs. David Story

Evil Season 4 Finale

Although Evil more or less sped through the final episodes of the show, fans of the series (including horror icon Stephen King) have been clamoring for Paramount+ or another streamer to pick up the series. If they were to do so, the show has a couple places it could explore. Leland's removal from the board could be undone, or other of the Sixty could resume their machinations against the world. While Ben remains in America, the finale confirms that he intends to visit his friends in Rome, affirming his presence in their lives. There's also the matter of Timothy.

Kristen's baby, Timothy is secretly the Antichrist, but plans to make him agent of evil were complicated by his baptism. However, the final moments of Evil tease he may still possess his demonic side, and Kristen is willing to keep it a secret from David. This could set up a compelling conflict between the pair in a hypothetical season 5, pitting the pair against one another over the fate of Timothy. While Evil had a solid finale, the show left enough teases about the future that fans will be desperately praying for a revival sooner than later.
