The Exorcist: Believer will debut on streaming surprisingly soon. The legacy sequel, which is the fifth feature-length installment of the long-running Exorcist franchise, was directed by David Gordon Green and features the return of Ellen Burstyn as the original character Chris MacNeil. In the movie, Chris is approached for assistance when single father Victor Fielding (Leslie Odom Jr.) begins to suspect that his daughter and her friend are possessed.
Per Deadline, the Exorcist: Believer streaming release date has been officially set. The movie, which is already available on video on demand at prices, will begin streaming on Peacock on December 1. That streaming release date will mark exactly eight weeks since the movie's theatrical debut on October 6, a premiere date that was pushed forward so as not to compete with the October 13 release of Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour.
Could The Exorcist: Believer Succeed On Streaming?
This streaming release could provide a shot in the arm for the franchise movie, which suffered financially in theaters. While the box office grossed more than $100 million worldwide off a relatively low $30 million budget, it was originally projected to earn much more. The movie, which is the first in an anticipated trilogy, also doesn't yet come close to recouping the costs of the distribution rights to the franchise, which reportedly cost around $400 million.
The Exorcist: Believer could potentially redeem itself commercially if it proves to be a draw for Peacock subscribers. However, it remains to be seen if the release pulls in substantial streaming numbers. There are a few factors working in its favor, however. For instance, the only major wide-release tentpole coming out on the weekend of December 1 is Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé. While the Japanese import Godzilla Minus One, and the John Woo action movie Silent Night could draw out some of Exorcist's demographic, horror viewers may elect to stream the new Peacock release instead of going out.
Godzilla Minus One is a new entry in Toho's Godzilla franchise that is unrelated to the American blockbuster franchise The Monsterverse, which also features Godzilla.
The Exorcist: Believer's streaming release date also comes at the beginning of a month featuring a shortage of horror titles. While Eli Roth's Thanksgiving is running throughout November, no other new wide-release horror movies are currently slated to hit theaters through the end of 2023. If a horror-hungry audience makes the legacy sequel a streaming hit, it could come much closer to proving itself as a strong investment than it did in its theatrical run.
