Clarissa's storyline on The Expanse has an unlikely Naomi connection: her conflict over the shuttle in the episode "Winnipesaukee" repeats the Weeping Somnambulist story from season 2. Wealthy-socialite turned terrorist, Clarissa Mao, or "Peaches" as Amos Burton calls her, was introduced in season 3. Initially working against Holden and his crew, Clarissa eventually has a change of heart and helps the protagonists stop Klaes Ashford from destroying The Ring. She survives the experience, but her crimes result in a lifetime prison sentence on Earth.

The penultimate season has honored the sci-fi show's past storylines: The Expanse season 5 repeated a season 2 story previously, with Peaches' experience on Earth with Amos — specifically her naivety regarding the planet's significant poverty — mirroring a similar arc that Bobbie Draper had in her debut season. In The Expanse season 5, episode 9, "Winnipesaukee," this theme continues, as Peaches' sheltered upbringing proves to be both a blessing and a curse.

Following Marco Inaros' devastating attack on Earth, Peaches and Amos must find a way to discreetly escape the planet: Amos wants to return to the Rocinante, and Peaches has little choice but to go along (under the circumstances, any prison she is sent to would certainly be dangerous). The two recruit Amos' old friend Erich and his gang to accompany them to a vacation spot for the elite where they find an unused space shuttle. Being familiar with the area and culture, Amos trusts Peaches to make judgment calls — but her lack of experience leads her to adopt a dangerously optimistic perspective. Initially, Peaches states that anyone who wants to can come along for the journey to Luna, and her insistence that the group shows mercy to the aggressive security personnel has fatal consequences.

Peaches' moral predicament echoes a previous Naomi story. In the season 2 penultimate episode "The Monster and the Rocket," Naomi risks her life to save refugees from Ganymede Station, which is rapidly becoming uninhabitable due to collapsing infrastructure. Rather than abandon the civilians — as Amos tries to force her to do — Naomi enters the raging crowd and pleads with them to listen. She explains that the ship has limited oxygen and that some people will be left behind. With the cooperation of some key figures, Naomi successfully negotiates with the crowd and organizes an evacuation of the youngest people. Unlike Peaches, who readily tells the other surviving that Earthers that they can come along without checking if they could, Naomi makes a wise, practical decision — no doubt a difficult choice, but a vastly safer one. Peaches was lucky that the shuttle was even able to launch with so many people on board, and her irresponsible choices had fatal consequences for those who were injured in the avoidable skirmish preceding the launch.

Luckily, Clarissa Mao was able to use her implant abilities to fight off the mob of armed aggressors; had she not possessed those abilities, the ship would likely have been swarmed and her entire group been killed. The shuttle scene in The Expanse was one of season 5's best, but the events were completely avoidable. Unlike Naomi, who possesses a lifetime of practical lessons learned from living on the Belt, Peaches has little applicable real-life experience to draw from. Her desire to be a better person is irable, but going forward, she'll need to temper that with realistic expectations for others' behavior — if she has any hope of surviving on the Belt.
